DAVID COSTA comes to BLISS

D a v i d - C o s t a

Looking at David Costa, it easy to understand why he has been shot by some of the most esteemed photographers. The list itself is impressive; Dylan Rosser, HOTSNAPZ, Fred Goudon, Mark Leighton, Pascal PRL and many others. Glancing through his portfolio is a visual testament to his appeal. Every inch of his 5'9" frame is beautifully toned, with well defined arms, strong shoulders, incredible abs, a sculpted back, the legs of an athlete, and a buttocks that appears chilseled from marble.

And that is only the physique. As a photographer, David has the facial structure that I dream of being able to work with. His jawline is perfectly defined, and accentuates the angular shape of the face. This is complimented by the full lips and light brown eyes, that appear to glow with golden highlights in some of his photos. He clearly knows and understands how to connect with the lens, expressing a range of emotions with just a look, and his muscle memory allows him to adapt his physicality from pose to pose, positioning his body for maximum impact.
x
The list of attributes has not passed without notice, and David has been featured in calendars, magazines, and various websites and blogs, including Beautiful Mag, NEXT, DNA, Mostbeautifulman, eXposure, and here at rSEANd PoP. He recently worked with iconic photographer Dylan Rosser for an upcoming project entitled RED.

I first featured David as my DailY PhotO FavE on July 10th, which led to our communicating on Model Mayhem. It is a sad condition of being human that we tend to have preconceived notions of what a person will be like personally, based on appearance or social position, and I confess that I initially assumed that he would be vain or self-important. I learned a long time ago that this tendency to categorize individuals without any basis is rooted in insecurity. Many of us are secretly intimidated by beauty, no matter how often we come in contact with it. David proved to be neither vain or self-important. A telling example was when I asked him what he considered to be his best feature. He did not even think to mention his looks or body, but answered in regards to his accomplishments.

David is charming, itelligent, dedicated to his craft, has a great sense of humor, and is very goal oriented. He gives the impression that he feels his looks are the result of hard work, proper diet and discipline, rather than any genetic blessing. I was intrigued by his unassuming manner and impressed that he was willing to take the time out for an interview with me considering the high caliber of artists that he has worked with. It took only a few emails for me to feel a genuine affection for him as an artist and a person. This was a person worth knowing more about, and after finishing his interview, I felt as if I had moved past the outer beauty and discovered something just as illuminating within.

..................................................................................
How did you get your start in modeling and what initially attracted you to it?
x
I have always had a passion for the human body, its beauty and its lines. Two years ago a girl asked me to do some photos with her because her husband is a photographer. So I had a go and then I made a book. Following that several contacts happened quite quickly, to my great surprise.

What was your first shoot like?
x
The first one didn't count because it was a very amateur job. My first real shoot was with
PPRL in Paris, here is an example: http://www.havanero.book.fr/pic-1-2.htm

Do you have a favorite photographer that you've worked with? If so, why?
x
I have appreciated the work of all the photographers who have accepted or wanted to work with me, I specially like Ernest Collins, Dylan Rosser, Hotsnapz and PPRL. I recently made a trip to London following an invitation by the great Dylan Rosser. It was during this trip that I also worked with Hotsnapz and Nicholas Andrew.

x
Who are some other photographers that you've worked with that you admire and why?
x
There were several. In September '08 I had to do five shoots with big French photographers, Ernest Collins and Jean Quelquejeu for an article in Blake Mag, JP Raibaud for his SKINS 2009 calendar, PPRL for an art gallery and Nathalie Dumas.
Each time I do my best to be in shape for the photos, although I am fit almost the whole year round with a few variations. All the photographers I have worked with have always been very respectful to me, regardless of the warnings I have often been given. I think if a photographer is a fine professional he is not going to tarnish his image by trying something on with a model.
x
x
Are there any particular photographers that you would like to work with in the future?
x
Yes, Luis Raphael, Rick Day, François Rousseau and a lot of others. I am often amazed when I see fine photos.
x
Do you have a particular favorite of all the images you've done?
x
Yes, this one.

Is there any particular image or idea that you have wanted to create, but have yet to do?
x
A sensual, glamour shooting with a girl.
x
What would you consider to be your best feature?
x
Succeeding in my professional career as a sports coach and trainer, always being in shape and why not a few features, publicity and modelling contracts.

Is there any one thing that you wish you could change about your self, in terms of physicality?

I don´t know, it´s for you to say
x
You appear nude in many of your photos. What is your general attitude about nudity?
x
I am ok with artistic nudity because it allow me to show all the lines of the body, which I like.
x

x
How would you define the difference between erotic art and pornography?
x
The erotic is an art showing the beauty and sensuality of the human body in its integrity and as a work of art, as with classical Greek statues. There is no sexual preference, connotation or other thought behind it. Pornography displays bodies with reference to sexuality, sexual orientation and intentions or acts.

You have an amazing physique. Has this created more modeling offers?
x
So far a few features.

x
Do you have a specific work out program? Do you work with a trainer?
I'm my own trainer (lol) because I am a personal trainer.
x
How did you get started in the field? How long have you been doing it?
x
I work since 2 years as a personal trainer and as an fitness instructor. Ive obtained a great deal of knowledge through my university education (STAPS Master's 1 and 2, involving training, physical prepration and sports management), my university diploma in physical preparation and STAPS licence in training and physical preparation, and by being awarded my two state permits (physical shaping and HACUMESE). In parallel ive gone further in my field by gaining much experience in dealing with a very varied clientele, thanks to my involvement as a gym coach as well as a sports coach, as a fitness instructor and in my bodybuilding work. Ive also taken part in athletes' physical preparation (rugby teams to federal level 1 and racing car drivers in the French GT3 championship).

What do you like most about being a trainer?

Share my passion, and help people to reach their goal, change physically en mentaly, feel better..

If someone was interested in hiring you as a personal trainer, what would be the best way to get in contact with you?

The best way is my personal training Website: http://www.davidcosta.fr/
x
Do you have any other artistic leanings besides modeling?
x
Salsa dancing, its my great passion with sports

When I look at your port on Model Mayhem, I am most impressed by the confidence that shines through your images. You are very bold and uninhibited. How would you describe your style?
I think my style is a mix of sensuality (many people tell me this about my body and my attitude), no doubt linked to my Portuguese and Spanish origins, and virility, with my strong facial features.

What is your definition of beauty? Is it purely physical, in terms of looks, or does attitude, carriage and personality play a role?
x
For me beauty is a whole, physical, yes, but also a presence, charisma, an attitude, a way of speaking and moving.
x
What advice would you give a new model starting out in the business?
x
It´s a very hard environment. You have to make good choices and be able to refuse some offers. I always stop and ask myself “is it in my interest to do this?”

On a lighter note, tell me 5 fun facts about David.

I do the housework in my underwear.
I always sleep in shorts and a tshirt, they are my pyjamas.
I always have a word to make people laugh wherever I am, at an airport, a supermarket, a bank or a restaurant.
I don't take myself at all seriously.
People on the street who think they are stars make me laugh!

What is your ultimate goal in this industry?
x
I would like to do a cover for a sports or fitness magazine in France or abroad. Or publicity for sports clothing.
