TURK MASON...THE PORN STAR...

Turk Mason is a porn star!

In this new era of political correctness, I probably should refer to him as an Adult Film Star, but I just don't feel that it aptly fits. Yes, Turk has been featured in nearly 40 films, alternating between playing a top or bottom, and he is probably one of the most recognizable twinks in the business. He has performed in a few Chi Chi LaRue films, worked with Falcon Studios and Hot House Video, and even won a Grabby award for erotic video.

But Turk does more than appear in films. He does print work, and has been featured in Playguy, Allboy, Inches, Unzipped, X Factor and Freshman, the last of which he was nominated for 2009 Freshman of the Year. His images can be seen in Justin Monroe's "Down The Rabbit Hole", Dylan Rosser's "Red", and soon in Lope Navo's "Weapons of Mass Destruction”, and Owen Keehnan's "Rising Starz". And then there's his blog and outstanding website, TurkXXXonline, which is reviewed in this issue. Quite simply, Adult Film Star does not incorporate all the facets of the beautiful young man's career. Cybersocket (the leader in gay and lesbian online information) agrees: Turk was voted one of the Top 50 Gay PORN STARS for 2009.

B: The one thing that I've always been curious about is what leads a person to do porn. Was this something that you had thought about in the past, or did it happen based on opportunity?

TM: I actually didn’t see myself doing porn, my friends actually persuaded me to do it…it didn’t take much persuading though, ha-ha!

B: You lost your virginity, gay wise, on a film set. Was there ever a moment when you were like, "I can't do this"?

TM: No, not during that scene, however there was a time much later, on set when I was going through a really hard time and was ready to give up. I actually walked out on set and spent the rest of the day crying. I soon realized that it wasn’t the job that was the problem, I was letting some family and relationship dramas get the best of me.

B: It takes a special type of confidence to be able to perform sexually in front of other people. It takes even more to do it on camera when you know millions of people will see it. Have you always had an exhibitionistic streak?

TM: Always! I will tell you I wasn’t able to watch myself until this last year though.

B: The first guy you had sex with on your first movie, Vance Winter (Dalton Vega in that film) ended up being your partner, and you guys continued to perform in movies together, as well as appear in magazines. With so much of your life in the public eye, how did the two of you maintain a sense of intimacy?

TM: At first it wasn’t hard, we remained very low-key and stayed away from the porn scene outside of work. The last year was probably the hardest because we had both gone on our own while remaining a couple. That means we slept with other models on film for the first time without the other being there. I’ll admit there was a little bit of jealousy even being as professional as we both are. Our intimacy only ever suffered when we were together but living on two opposite ends of the state – distant always makes maintain intimacy difficult.

B: The idea of two porn stars falling in love is intriguing to many people for a variety of reasons. Do you feel as if you guys had become a novelty?

TM: It would appear that way, if you look us up on you tube there are several video compilations of us as a couple made by fans. Also, I work at a porn distributing company that sells our old videos, I’ve been told that they continue to sell some of our most well known titles together and in reviews fans often say they miss us together.
We did a final live show together this last April for my site just a few weeks before we broke up and that show had the most viewers of any show with another model I have ever done.

B: You performed so much together in sexual situations, that people were bound to speculate on your private sex life. Did you guys have a healthy sex life off camera?

TM: To be honest…not really. It had its ups and downs, towards the end it got really good, but other problems remained. We always had incredible chemistry and the sex was great. We NEVER fucked, we always made love, even in our films, and I think that was what drew people to us.

B: With the demands of your careers and the performances, did you ever reach a point that you two weren't all that interested in sex off camera?

TM: I never did, I’m a very sexual person all the time, but I can’t speak for Vance.

B: You both left the business for awhile and moved away. What did you do once leaving the porn industry?

TM: I began bartending and went back to college for a bit, and Vance began working as a server at a sushi restaurant and joined me in school.

B: Close to the four year mark, you two mutually decided to separate. Was getting back into the business your first choice or did you consider doing something else?

TM: By that point I had already re-entered the biz and Vance was weighing his options. I was at a bit of a turning point and needed something familiar in my life to fill the void. I didn’t anticipate going full force back into the industry but the busier I kept myself the happier I was. I thrive when I have lots to do; I am not one to sit still for very long.

B: For most of us, even after a relationship has ended, there is a lingering feeling of possessiveness that leads to jealousy concerning who the ex is currently sleeping with. Did you experience any of that once Vance returned to the industry? Did he experience it towards you?

TM: We both did, and many times we ended up back in each other’s arms after these new relationships would end. Now we are close friends and we always joke about killing the others boyfriend if they step out of line, ha-ha!

B: One of the most controversial topics in gay porn today centers around bare-backing. It has definitely made a comeback, attracting a huge following. We even have gay cream pies. In some of your earlier work with Vance you two performed bareback. You have since taken a stand against it. What is your opinion of bare-backing in movies? Why do you feel it is so popular now?

TM: I think it is obvious why it is so popular, even I will admit it’s very hot to watch. However with how easy it is to spread disease and STD’s these days it just isn’t worth it for the models, and fans just need to be okay with that. As an exclusive couple Vance and I barebacked but we always had a disclaimer stating that we only did it because we were with each other and no one else and we got tested regularly.
I can’t tell you how important safe sex on film is, there were countless times throughout my career when there was an outbreak of some STD on a set I had worked on. Thankfully I never caught anything, but bare-backing makes it just that much easier to get something that you may have to live with for the rest of your life, or even worse die from.
Still today many of the biggest companies in the business do not test before a shoot, even with organizations like AIM (Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation) set in place that test models quickly, effectively, and inexpensively. If people wish to continue seeing their favorite models again, and again, and again, then they need to understand that we need to play safely.

B: It seems as if everyone is an undercover porn star wannabe these days. It is commonplace for people to upload explicit photos of themselves on dating or hook-up sites, to perform sex shows on webcams or send videos of themselves masturbating on cell phones. How has this upsurge in free porn affected the business?

TM: I’m not sure that this has affected the industry in any significant way, but just like everything else, the industry has taken a major hit due to the economy. Who wants to pay about $30 a month for a member’s site (like mine) when there are so many free tube sites out there and money is tight. That has become the problem for many of us, trying to find new ways to market and keep our names out there these days. I’m just happy to still be around honestly.

B: With so many people looking for "the real thing" as opposed to the glossy images we are used to seeing in movies, porn seems to have transitioned to going further and further to capture an audience. This no holds mentality has introduced us to gay double penetration, bukkake and an increase in fetish videos involving pissing and fisting. How do you feel about these new trends?

TM: Well, I have always been your more ‘vanilla’ porn star I guess, but with the changing times I have adapted and done some fetish scenes such as bondage and pissing – and I’ve come to find out, I am kind of into it, ha-ha. So I don’t have a problem with it. Like anything else, porn must grow with the times. I think this “real thing” mentality is actually what keeps my site afloat, as I do a live webcam show every week, including guests, toys, and fetishes. People seem to be moving away from the rehearsed big production porn and more towards the live and amateur works. A good porn star has to adapt.

B: I firmly believe that porn has a necessary place within society. It provides an outlet for individuals who are not social enough to find partners and indulges our fantasies. I am easily annoyed when people try to pigeonhole performers into this box of degenerate low life’s, or attempt to look down on the performers because of their chosen profession. These are the same people who buy or rent to movies to jack off to, and yet they feel that watching rather than being in the film puts them higher on the social scale. What would you like to say to these people?

TM: Fuck you! Ha-ha… no really that is what I would say. I agree with you completely. I hate it when people put others down based on stupid things like what they do for a living. Porn definitely has its necessary place in society, this has proven itself to me time and time agin through the close-knit community surrounding my blog and website. My fans are more than just fans of mine; they have a mutual interest that has formed friendships. It’s a great thing and I wouldn’t trade my job for anything else.

B: The other argument is that porn is a legal form of prostitution, which is ridiculous since it involves actors playing roles. The roles just happen to include graphic sex. This is not the same as picking up a trick on the street (which I also don't have a problem with. It's the oldest profession, so clearly there is a need for it). What is your viewpoint?

TM: Once again I agree with you, there is a need for prostitution or it wouldn’t have stuck around so long, these people provide a service, however unorthodox it may be. Porn is NOT prostitution however. The lines have been blurred by many actors that have put themselves on Rent Boy and other various websites to get escort work (something I have not done but have never been opposed to). Porn Stars are actors just like any other.

B: If I had a dime for every guy I photographed or met that told me he wanted to get into the porn business, I would be a millionaire. What do you think are the top five essentials to being able to make it in this business?

TM:
1) The ability to perform on command
2) A look that is both beautiful and recognizable
3) Confidence
4) You must be able to stay true to yourself and your beliefs
5) The ability to remain humble

B: I have met many a porn legend in the past 20 years, including Jeff Stryker, Joey Stefano, and even Brian Hawkes, who was one of the "it" boys in the 80's. He usually was the top in films, but told me he preferred to be a bottom in his private life. You do both on film. Do you have a preference?

TM: I actually prefer to flip-flop when I can, I mean come on, isn’t that the joy of being gay? Getting the best of both worlds.

B: I went to a porn shoot in LA in 1990 and I remember it vividly. I had answered an ad for a freelance photographer and the address happened to be a motel. I got there and it was still shots for a straight porn film. I was unnerved at first, but needed the money. It was far from the idea I had in my head of what a shoot would be like. As hot as the scene was, I was not even slightly aroused because of all the activity. How do you maintain excitement, let alone an erection, as a performer with so much happening around you?

TM: These days we aren’t expected to, we are simply feed Viagra, Cialis, or any of the other various arousal pills on the market. The most effective is a shot that is given in the vein at the base of the dick – this will keep you hard no matter what.
I don’t know if it is a good thing to feed young models these stimulants years before they need them but as we are the first wave to be taking them we won’t know for some years to come what the side effects may be. Hopefully there are none.

B: Has there ever been a situation where you could not get wood? How did you handle it?

TM: Well In that situation, if pills don’t work or aren’t available, and assuming time permitted we would just take a break, or pick back up the following day. Worst case scenario if there is a time crunch, the director may substitute another model. But this has yet to happen to me on set.
I have been in the situation where it has been difficult or impossible to cum and we had to try ‘alternative’ ways to make that happen or appear to happen.

B: What is your favorite thing to perform, sexually, in a film?

TM: Blow jobs, because there just hot anyway you look at it.

B: Where do you draw the line? What acts do you refuse to perform onscreen?

TM: I refuse to do bareback, scat, or swallow piss (however, I am okay being pissed on), and that’s about all I can think of.

B: Have you ever felt that porn finally crossed the line and needed to be reeled in a bit?

TM: Not so far, but with the ever changing times and growing fetishes I’m sure that soon it will.

B: You won a Grabby award for one of your movies. How did that feel?

TM: Pretty awesome! I actually didn’t even know I was nominated for a Grabby, my friend and fellow porn actor Shane Frost informed me via text message when I won. I was very surprised.

B: You've also been nominated as one of the Top 50 Gay Porn Stars. Are you excited?

TM: I am just honored to have been recognized amongst some of the biggest names in gay porn to date.

B: I did a photo shoot recently and this magazine came up in conversation with the boyfriend of the model I was shooting. I told him that I was doing this feature on you for the new issue and his eyes lit up. When I said Turk Mason, he replied, "Oh my God! I know who he is!" Does being in the business make it more difficult to get romantically involved with another person? Do you only date within the industry or do you date outside of it? If you get involved with someone who is not a part of the porn industry, do they understand that what you do is "work" and has no bearing on your relationship, or does jealousy eventually cause problems?

TM: I was just having this conversation last night with fellow actor Dak Ramsey. I actually prefer to date out of the industry; it is very hard to not compete with your partner when you are both in the same industry. However, I think that would be true with any self-driven individuals in any profession. No matter how professional you are there will always be jealousy and competition, and that simply doesn’t equal a good and healthy relationship. I will say that anyone that wants to date me or even more, have a significant relationship with me, needs to respect what I do for a living and not be judgmental or try to get me to quit. I live first and foremost for myself and I will do whatever it is that I want to do with my life. That is not meant to sound selfish, I am far from selfish, I have just realized through my years that in order to help others you must first help yourself – if you’re not happy how can you expect to make someone else happy?

B: Have you ever regretted your decision to be in porn? Have you ever regretted any decisions you made within the industry, such as doing a certain film or a type of performance?

TM: Never. Regrets are for the weak and I am not weak. Everything is a learning experience.

B: Unless they've been to your website, some people may not realize that you used to cast for adult films. Who are some of the people you discovered?

TM: Probably the biggest two names are C1R’s Josh Vaughn, and Cocky Boy’s Tory Mason.

B: What was it that you looked for when casting a performer?

TM: Body, personality, and a true desire to do porn. Casting is difficult because you typically don’t get to meet the model first so these three things are important.

B: We now are lucky enough to have your website - TurkXXXonline.com so we can get our Turk fixes on a daily basis. The site just completed a design make-over and was re-launched on Sept 20th. What brought about the decision to start the site, and why did you feel it needed to be revamped?

TM: I started the sight a year ago on the 24th of this month (October) and it started as just a blog and place to view my photos. The original design was very dark (black & red) and I wanted to revamp it to express more of my personality and to make it more user friendly. Now it is bright, simple, and more fun!

B: I have talked about him in various features so it's become a well known fact that I adore J Phoenix. He is one of my all time favorite models, alongside you and a few others. You two have been photographed together by a few photographers, but even I was not aware (initially) that he was appearing on your site. The chemistry between the two of you is electric. Is he one of your favorites as well? What is it like to perform with him sexually, as opposed to just the standard modeling?

TM: What can I say here without getting he and I in trouble…hmmm…J is a great model, performer, and friend and I am happy to have had the chance to work with him on several occasions both in a mainstream setting and an erotic setting. Our chemistry is great and I must say so is the sex (did I say is instead of was…oops! Ha-ha). No really we work very well together and he is definitely one of my favorites to work with and damn sexy too.

B: Let's talk about other co-stars. You've worked with quite a few, is it possible that you could narrow down your favorites to a top 5 list?

TM: Sure thing!

1. Jude Collin
2. J Phoenix
3. Trystian Sweet
4. Jeremy Hall
5. Brent Corrigan

B: What was it about these guys that were so special?

TM: Each was very easy to work with and we had good chemistry and lots of fun on set.

B: In Hollywood, many actors decide to try their hand at directing. Is this a possible direction that you'd like to go in eventually?

TM: Go in? That just might already be in the works…you’ll just have to stay tuned for that.

B: How long do you think you can continue to do movies and shows?

TM: As of now I think I could go another 5 years, but maybe longer.

B: Have you considered what you'd like to do once you stop performing?

TM: Something in entertainment that’s for sure, don’t laugh, but my dream job is to be on a soap opera. I have always loved the glamour, drama, and trashiness of them – much like porn, ha-ha.

B: What upcoming projects will we be seeing?

TM: Well you can expect to see me doing a lot more public events in the coming year as well as making some great additions to Turk XXX Online.

B: This question is a request from one of the readers: “Do you ever answer a personal email that is sent to your site?"

TM: All the time, I actually read my emails, I may not get back to everyone and not always right away but I do my best.

B: I can attest to that for all the readers, as our contact was initiated through email. And if I may say so, you were always extremely friendly and surprisingly prompt with your responses.

Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to learn more about you. I wish you continued success in every facet of your career. You'll have to autograph my book on you by Mark Grantham. Is there anything you'd like to leave us all with?

TM: I just want to say thank you for having an interest in me and doing such an in depth piece. Thanks to all of you who read this and all my fellow ‘Turkies’ out there.
