Chris Teel refers to himself as an up and coming photographer, which only serves to illustrate his humility. The truth is that the name Chris Teel is well known by many male models who want to add his unique style and edge to their portfolios. His work ranges from standard portraiture to nudes, both artistic and erotic, and his model choices include the well known like Eric Rensburg to complete novices. They also cross ethnic and racial lines while some other photographers make a name for themselves specializing with a single group. It is that level of diversity that caught my attention in 2009 and has held my admiration to this day. It is also why I wanted to start off the first issue of 2012 with an interview and feature of his beautiful images, and why he graces the first cover.

BLISS: I have to start by saying that I am a HUGE fan of your work and have been for quite some time. When did you first start taking photos?

CHRIS TEEL: I appreciate the sentiment Sean, the feedback that I get from the people who follow my work certainly motivates me and confirms that I made the right decision when I left the corporate world 3 years ago to pursue photography on a somewhat full-time basis.

B: Were you influenced by any particular artists?

CT: I would say I'm influenced by a number of artists from different fields. I love Montreal painter Yvon Goulet's masculine esthetic and I'm a big fan of NYC designer Scooter Laforge right now. In fact, I'm hoping to incorporate some of his work into one of my shoots in the very near future! Its a provocative piece, I just have to find the right model. In terms of photography, I respect what James Bidgood was able to accomplish with glue guns, sheers and papier mache in his tiny apartment. Such creativity! I enjoy shooting different concepts, challenging myself to do something new with almost every shoot and I think is partly influenced by the fact I see inspiration almost everywhere I look.

B: What were your early days like as a photographer? What types of images did you shoot?

CT: It was certainly more challenging finding models 3 years ago that's for sure! It took a while to build a strong portfolio and to build my reputation as a professional who wasn't in the business as an excuse to see naked men. Out of 20 inquiries I made back then, I'd get maybe one positive response. My hit rate is a lot better now! As I do today, I shot a mix of fashion, physique and artistic nudes right from the beginning.

B: Have you always focused mainly on male models?

CT: My personal philosophy has always been to shoot what appeals to and inspires me so, yes, I have to this point worked almost exclusively with male models. However, as I broaden my portfolio with a particular focus on fashion photography I expect I will be working with more female models. I have my eyes on the girlfriend of one of my newest models - she's a stunner and I'm quite interested to seeing what we can capture. Keep your eyes open - that's all I'm saying for now.

B: Where do you find most of your models?

CT: Right now I'd say most of my models find me through my website, or through various social media. More and more are referred to me by guys I've worked with. Modelmayhem has been a great resource and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in getting into photography or modelling. Its a great way of networking and connecting with talented individuals on either side of the lens.

B: When choosing a model to work with, what physical attributes do you look for first?

CT: Obviously I'm looking for guys with nice faces and good physiques - that's a basic requirement. More importantly though, I'm looking for guys who can convey an emotion of some kind. I've shot a few 'blank slates' and can say I much prefer shooting models with bold personalities that project through the image. Whether its a sense of confidence, an expression of fear, or a explosion of aggression, I'm more interested in the overall story an image conveys, than in any specific body parts.

B: You managed to make each of your models look sexy, and you shoot them in a way that makes it look effortless. What defines sexy to you?

CT: In the short time I've been shooting I've realized that confidence is much more of a turn-on than bulging pecs and washboard abs. Younger models are much more focussed on the specifics of their physiques, with the need to be perfect. Though some have come very close, perfection doesn't exist and I find that guys who realize that tend to be more comfortable with who they are and you really see that in the shots.

B: Being naked can be a vulnerable emotion, even for models who frequently pose nude. How do you make your models comfortable during a shoot?

CT: For me it comes down to two things - clear communication and lots of eye contact! Every single model I've shot knew what I was looking for before ever stepping in front of my camera. Its important to know where each individual draws his personal boundaries in terms of nudity to avoid those awkward moments during the shoot. I encourage my models to ask questions upfront and I give them the space they need when it comes time to disrobe. I shoot nudes the same way I shoot clothed shots, I don't make a big deal about it. I think that by treating it as matter-of-fact, most guys get over that awkward stage just a few minutes into the shoot and many actually enjoy the experience. I also follow the 'Hey buddy, eyes up here' philosophy!

B: Sometimes a model decides he likes a particular photographer and decides to do a nude shoot, then later ends up regretting the decision for whatever reason. Have any of your model’s ever experienced nude remorse over images they have done with you?

CT: Not that anyone has ever mentioned to me. I'm very clear that a model should not shoot what he doesn't want all over the internet as you can never get that back. I have had a few models who've expressed a willingness to shoot more explicit nudes than they had originally communicated and, in those cases, I've checked and double-checked to ensure they knew what they were doing so that they weren't putting themselves in a position they'd later regret.

B: I feel like the term “erotic” is perception based and consider most of your nude work to have erotic elements. Do you consider your work to be erotic or just nude male art?

CT: There is a strong erotic element to what I shoot, absolutely. I have shot figure studies but personally find those types of shots to be somewhat sterile and certainly not memorable.

B: Obviously, the erotic genre can veer into more explicit territory, including erections or non simulated sexual acts. Have you ever had an interest in or photographed more explicit style imagery?

CT: Take a look through my portfolio and you tell me! :P

B: When do you feel erotica crosses over into pornographic territory, or do you even think there is a distinction?

CT: I feel the line before erotica and porn is somewhat arbitrary and obviously the boundaries change depending on who you talk to. For me, the difference between the two is that one, perhaps, leaves a little more to the imagination than the other. I think intent is quite important. I put a lot of thought into the concepts I shoot and work with a number of models who are willing to approach that line without jumping right over it. Having said that I accept that some people will see my work as pornographic as a result of their circumstances. These are the same people who view Sears underwear ads as pornographic.

B: You have worked with a few models that I adore like Eric Rensburg, GIO and Mardi Reid. All three of these guys have a built in fan base and numerous admirers. What was it like working with each of them and why do you think they appeal to so many people?

CT: Clearly all three are great looking models with phenomenal physiques and each brings a high-level of energy to their shoots. Key for me though is that each of these guys delivers in terms of character and personality. Clearly none of them are introverts! Though they are all very different people, they love what they do and I think people see that in their images. As a photographer I appreciate their fearlessness. Its not every model who'd wear bunny ears, while simulateously holding an Easter basket and sucking a carrot!

B: Your catalog is pretty extensive with a large variety of models. Have any of them ever become an artistic muse that you’ve photographed repeatedly?

CT: There are a number of models I've shot repeatedly - Sam Boux, Zack Fraser, Shariq, Tristan Harris and Mardi Reid to name a few. Corey Kirk and I shot about 10 times in a 6-month period and I would describe him as a muse. He manages his modelling career as a business and has very specific ideas as to what he wants to accomplish. He's the kind of guy who'll call you up with an idea and we'd shoot it that night. He's gorgeous, of course, and knows what he wants. We've taken a break from shooting as we're each moving in different directions but I'm always open to shooting him in the future. I consider him to be the little brother I never had.

B: People are fascinated by the penis, even if they don’t want to admit it, and the genre of male imagery is filled with certain models that have been quite blessed in the lower region, which creates an increase in their popularity. R Luis is one example and has probably been on every male image photographer’s wish list at one point or another. The newest entry in this category is Jonathan Luke who you did a beautiful series of photos with. What was he like to work with?

CT: I saw the results of some of Jonathan's early work and I knew we had the raw material to create some amazing shots - which we certainly did! His philosophy is that the nude body is nothing to be ashamed of and I believe he'd be naked 100% of the time, if he could be. He's aware of his unique gifts and he has specific ideas as to how he wants to be represented. Since some of our shots have gone public, Jon's been approached by a number of international photographers and I truly believe we'll see a lot more of him for some time to come.

B: You’ve also worked with one of my favorite new faces, Alex Janjanin, and your nude images were some of his best work. What was that experience like?

CT: Again, another model who's very confident with nudity which is somewhat surprising considering Alex was only 19 at the time we shot. We shot at Hanlan Point, the nude beach in Toronto and he definitely attracted some admiring glances. Alex and I were planning a second shoot but he ended up moving to L.A. He took a break from modelling but I understand he's considering getting back into it. I'm hoping our paths will cross again at some point.

B: You may not realize it but you are on the wish list for quite a few models, in addition to being a huge inspiration for other photographers. Are you, at all, aware of the impact your work has?

CT: To be honest, that does surprise me somewhat. I feel I'm still learning and developing my own style. There are many photographers I admire, and to hear that I inspire other is flattering for sure, but the idea is still a bit foreign to me. I am my own worst critic, I see my work from 3 years ago, two years ago and ask myself "What was I thinking?" Ask me again in 20 years and we'll see what I think then - LOL.

B: What about influences for you? Which photographers, past and present, do you admire, and what stands out about their work for you?

CT: I take my influences from a number of photographers with different backgrounds and varying styles. As a small town teenager, I was definitely drawn to Bruce Weber's work, connecting to the homoerotic nature of the images before I completely understood the feelings I had at the time. A few years later I discovered Jim French's work with Colt Studios. By then I had clearly figured out the feelings I'd had. :) My present day influences include photographers like Dylan Rosser, Rick Day and David Vance - each celebrates man as a sensual and sexual being. I respect how Joe Oppedisano and Justin Monroe each push the creative envelope, challenging their audiences to the 'porn versus eroticism' discussion. I find that, in general, Montreal photographers have a great eye and I respect the way they capture sensuality in such an artistically different way. B: How would you describe your particular style of photography?

CT: I hesitate to put labels to what I do as I don't want to be limited to shooting a specific style of photography. I recognize that many of my images are perceived as erotic but I also shoot lifestyle images - though they may not get the same exposure. I can describe what my work is NOT. Though I utilize post-production tools like most other photographers, I don't manufacture images that didn't exist in front of my camera. I'm not going to cut and paste a model's image dropping him in front of fantasy backdrop complete with fire-breathing dragons. I understand there's a market for that, but my focus is primarily on capturing real connections between the model and the camera.

B: We all have our own perceptions about the images we shoot. What do you consider your strengths?

CT: I connect well with most of my models and I'm able to use that to capture their personality in the images I produce. Going back to your earlier question that might be one of the reasons models do agree to work with me.

B: What would you like to see improve most in terms of your photography?

CT: I could always improve upon some of the technical aspects. Some of my favorite shots are ones taken with natural light - I'm continually working to develop my studio lighting techniques. I am a million miles ahead of where I was when I started though - I couldn't show you the first few shoots I did. Horrifying!

B: Certain photographers like working with new models because the effort they put into a shoot combined with their excitement can produce some excellent results that don’t fall into a “seen that pose before” box. Other photographers prefer seasoned models because they usually do not require much direction. Do you have a preference?

CT: Experienced models are great in that you can get a number of quality shots in a limited amount of time and they're usually more comfortable shooting nudes. However, I really do like working with the newer models. It can be an awesome experience directing them through their first shoot, watching them develop in terms of posing and seeing their response to the final images. They usually see themselves in a way they hadn't seem themselves before and that's extremely gratifying for me.

B: It seems like entertainment is centered around some level of drama these days and people always want a piece of the “inside scoop” or gossip. Without naming names (unless you want to, of course), have any of your shoots stood out as being a horrible experience, and if so, what made it so bad?

CT: I've lost count of all the shoots I've done and I'm fortunate that the vast majority have been positive experiences. There were only three shoots that really didn't turn out and in all 3 cases it came down basically to attitude and communication issues. One model I shot this past summer pushed back on a lot of the direction I was giving him during the shoot. I had asked him to step outside of his regular facial expressions and he refused, stating that he'd "look stupid". Essentially, he couldn't let go of his need to control his image and we clashed to the point that I called off the shoot as neither of us was getting the images we wanted. I see each of these shoots as a learning experience and they just reinforced the importance of clear, upfront communication.

B: On a more positive note, do any of your shoots stand out as being one of your best or most memorable experiences? If so, which one was it and why?

CT: Some of my favorite shoots are ones I've done with couples - usually real-life couples. The chemistry is unmistakeable and burns through the lens. Direction is usually kept to a minimum in these types of shoots, I just let them do what feels natural and right for them.

B: You’ve worked with so many people, but there are tons of aspiring male models, along with the experienced ones, on the landscape now. Are there any that you really want to work with?

CT: Right now I'm planning my next trip to Montreal for New Year's and, of course, I'll have to do a number of shoots while I'm there. I'm talking to new and experienced models, some I've worked with before and many I haven't. I haven't scheduled all of them yet but I promise that they will be some of the best I've worked with so far!

Your readers are probably familiar with a lot of guys on my wish list - these models come immediately to mind: Todd Sanfield, Brock Chapman, Joseph Sayers, Chase Hostler, Nuno Branco, Phil Fusco, DW Chase, Sam Devries.... I could go on and on. There are a lot of great guys out there!

B: What advice would you give to a male model just starting out?

CT: Identify what it is that you want to do and develop a plan to do it. If you're going to be an underwear model, make sure you develop that 6-pack. Treat modeling like a business, you are the product. Dream but be realistic as well - its hard work and not for the faint of heart. Most models don't make a full-time living doing this but many leverage modeling to get ahead in other fields like acting, singing, nutrition/fitness and personal training, etc. Network and ask lots of questions of other models and photographers!

B: What if a model wants to work with you…what is the best way to get in contact with you?

CT: The easiest way is to contact me through my website at christeel.ca

B: What would you consider to be the biggest mistake a potential new model can make in terms of getting into the industry?

CT: Many new models will pose for almost any photographer, to get shots for their portfolio. I find that some models are not that selective and they end up with images that really aren't useable. Either do your research and find talented photographers who are also building their portfolios or save up your money and spend it on an established photographer who can get you the shots you need. Its an investment you need to make upfront if you're serious about getting work in the industry. Its an investment that also doesn't necessarily need to cost you an arm and a leg!

B: You actually live in Canada, though some people are under the impression that you are an American photographer. Do you do most of your shoots there? Do you ever come to the states to work with models?

CT: I moved to Toronto, from Western Canada, when I knew I was going to pursue photography full-time. I work with a lot of local models as well as international models who travel here for business, or pleasure. I get to Montreal several times a year and try to get to NYC once or twice a year. I've had success shooting in Chicago as well. Within the next year or so I hope to get to London, San Francisco, and Miami!

B: Do you find there to be any differences in the models where you live as opposed to those in the United States?

CT: There are cultural, geographical and market-driven differences that I've noticed. Toronto is very much a city where commercial models, and actors, thrive. As a result Toronto models tend to be a bit more conversative in the types of shoots they do and in how they portray themselves. Montreal is a cultured, artistically rich city and the models there tend to gravitate towards more conceptual shoots where being 'pretty' is not the primary objective. Though Toronto is culturally diverse, it pales in comparison to NYC. As an international destination for beautiful men around the world, New York holds something for everyone and I'd shoot there every day if I could!

B: If you could do a location shoot anywhere in the world, with any model you wanted where and who would it be?

CT: I'd love to spend a long weekend shooting 5 or 6 of my favorite models at a cabin in Northern Ontario. Very natural nude shots of guys just being guys interacting with nature. I could do a book!

B: What are 5 things that you value most in your life?

CT: I've been fortunate to have had the support of my friends and family as I've made the choice to leave the corporate world to get into photography. Along with that I've had the unconditional love of my baby, Chanel. In addition, I've been gifted with great health and a full head of hair. And my camera!

B: What is the best lesson you’ve learned in life so far?

CT: Don't sweat the small stuff!

B: What projects can we look forward to from you in 2012, and when is the Chris Teel book finally going to happen?

CT: With winter coming fast and furious I thought the number of shoots I'd be doing would decline for a few months. The opposite seems to be happening and I'm booking shoots well into the new year at this point. I've recently pulled together a creative team that is going to help me produce a number of projects in 2012 and a book is high on the list of to do's. January's going to start off strong and I see 2012 as being the strongest year of my career thus far. That's all I can say for now :)

There is a certain appeal that comes from viewing male images from the past, such as Athletic Model Guild, James Bidgood and even Old Reliable. Much of that appeal comes from the styling and the way in which light is used, which is very different from what you see in today’s digital images. There is a raw quality that adds a sense of realness, which might be viewed as surreal or retro in today’s photo market, but there are artists that are still reinterpreting it today.

The work of LENU does not feel like an interpretation. It is closer to homage, but it also feels as if the artist himself is actually from that era and that we are viewing past gallery images. His use of color, the composition, the models, the posing are intriguing because they represent a style that many of us are familiar with but do not get to see that often anymore. There are websites dedicated solely to male nudes of the past, and any of LENU’s pieces would fit well, but these are strictly men of today and it is a testament to his craft that he can create this art and have the viewers wonder about the origin.

I had the opportunity to interview LENU, a New Orleans native who now resides in Las Vegas, about his photography, as well as his various brands like clubLENU.com and HUNKFEST. I discovered that his passion extends beyond the camera and into the socially conscious arena with his stance against domestic abuse. He shared his thoughts, his ideas and his art in this exclusive feature.

BLISS: Where did the name LENU come from?

LENU: My infatuation with the beauty of the male nude was well known by the time I finished my fine art studies in Europe and the United States. I was given the byname, LENU, by my best friend and late partner, Jacques Bredat. He thought that LENU was the perfect byname for an artist that uses the male nude as a medium for artistic expression. LENU comes from the French phrase, Le Nu dans L’Art (The Nude in Art).

B: You are a native of New Orleans, which is one of my favorite cities. What was it like to grow up there?

LENU: Growing up in New Orleans was both fascinating and adventurous. Even at a very young age, I remember being attracted to the provocative and rather risqué nature of the culture of our city. Especially, during Mardi Gras. Men and women were proud of their bodies and weren’t embarrassed to expose themselves in very public places. And children weren’t shielded from provocative adult activities (that weren’t sexual in nature, of course).

B: The city has a reputation for decadence. How has the atmosphere of New Orleans influenced your work?

LENU: In hindsight, I suspect that I’ve always questioned public nudity as being lewd or immoral. Though, there were laws against public nudity in New Orleans. During Mardi Gras, most ignored them and boldly displayed as much of their bodies as the law would allow and beyond, in some cases. Instead of feeling embarrassed for them, I applauded their courage and self-confidence. I am sure that this was the beginning of my recognizing the nude form as beauty and my fascination with instilling the courage and self-confidence that so impressed me as a child into my work and my male subjects.

B: You currently reside in another infamous city, Las Vegas, where gambling and prostitution are legal. What prompted you to move there?

LENU: Well, it definitely was not the gambling or the prostitution. And, prostitution is not legal in Las Vegas, but most think it is. Upon leaving school in England, I became the protégé of French interior designers, Claude LeCourt and Jacques Bredat. The company excelled and relocated to Southern California. Over the years to follow, I would become a full partner in LeCourt et Bredat Interiors. For many years, photography has only been a very satisfying and lucrative hobby. As a freelance creative director, I designed, GQ-LIVE, the highly successful promotional campaign for Gentlemen’s Quarterly magazine. However, I was fired for creating a segment that featured male images that were “too erotic” for the mainstream publication.

The Los Angeles male modeling agency, Male Image, hired me to develop their client’s portfolios. My stylish images of desperately beautiful men have appeared on countless portfolio pages. I have photographed several covers, centerfolds and nude layouts for Playgirl, allure, The Advocate and Advocate Men and a host of gay magazines, as well as, several international hunk calendars and greeting card collections. However, my main profession has always been interior design. When my partner died, a dear friend and colleague asked me to collaborate on a design project for an executive of Caesars Palace. After completing the project, I relocated and continue to reside in Las Vegas.

B: How does living in Vegas differ from New Orleans, and what most appeals to you about living there?

LENU: Well, both cities have very wild reputations as party towns. But, when you’re a resident of either city, life is pretty normal. The only difference is when you have the urge to do something special, there’s no limit to the variety of activities available to you. What appeals to me most about living in Las Vegas is the city’s receptivity to innovative and creative ideas. And, of course, the city’s liberal attitude toward nudity. However, female nudity is far more acceptable than male nudity. Gentlemen’s strip clubs are very successful, while clubs featuring nude men have failed time and time again.

B: You state, clearly, that you have an “infatuation with the nude male form as art”. What is (it) that appeals to you?

LENU: In my opinion, the male nude is the epitome of creation! Nude men are like snowflakes, unique and exquisitely beautiful in their own way. And, I think, from a very young age, that I have been very much infatuated with the taboos of society regarding the beauty of men. I noticed that when a woman was beautiful, nobody hesitated in letting her know how beautiful and sensual she was. Beautiful men were treated differently. This contradiction, is what fascinated me. Some men are just as beautiful and sensual as some women. I am infatuated with showing this in my artwork!

B: The male nude does not seem to get the respect it deserves in art, in spite of the various interpretations throughout history, including the Statue of David. Why do you think there is such a stigma attached to the nude male body?

LENU: SOCIETAL CONDITIONING! “Real men should never expose their bodies!” If you are not gay and out, you should never show that you appreciate the beauty of the nude male in art or otherwise. And, I feel that many mainstream art galleries, magazines, etc., appreciate the beauty of the male nude form, but are afraid of the stigma attached to acknowledging the beauty of a nude man. When I started photographing nude men, most of my models were straight men. So, I marketed my work to mainstream art galleries, publications and through press releases, to no avail. So, I placed advertisements in mainstream publications with photos! I received death threats!

B: Magazines like Playboy and Penthouse celebrated the female pin-up and are viewed somewhat respectfully in mainstream press. The closet (CLOSEST? lol) counterpart was Playgirl, but it never received the same kind of respect. Do you feel that male nudes are automatically viewed as pornographic?

LENU: NO! I feel that male nudes are automatically viewed as less than manly! I have worked for both Playgirl magazine and Gentlemen’s Quarterly magazine and the most constantly heard comment was, “THAT LOOKS TOO GAY!” My work was rejected over and over again because the model looked too pretty, demure, sensual, etc! Ironically, over 95 percent of Playgirls magazine subscribers were men! And the women that attended Playgirl magazine public parties were recruited and paid. Most women thought that the men featured in nude layouts were gay…when most were not. Of course, we never shared these facts with our models.

B: One man’s art is another man’s pornography. What, if anything, do you think separates the two?

LENU: Well, I think that the saying, “BEAUTY (or ART) IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER”, is a very true saying! Personally, I feel that pornography has to involve a sexual act or an obvious focus on the male genitalia! Instead of creating images that intentionally “turn-on” those that are viewing my work, I prefer to leave much of that aspect to their imagination. This is why I seldom show male genitals in my images. Often, the genitals distract from the true beauty of the subject and the composition. I prefer to tease the audience by prompting the subject to seduce the lens. That being said, pornography remains a billion dollar industry. So, many must consider it a well accepted art form.

B: I am a vocal proponent of pornography as a legitimate and valid media. What is your view of pornography?

LENU: “TO EACH, HIS OWN!” Personally, I find pornography very boring and repetitive! However, I support those who are proponents of pornography. And, I certainly consider pornography a legitimate and valid media. It is a proven worldwide industry!

B: You do shoot erotica. How far have you, or would you go in terms of what is shown in your work?

LENU: I would go as far as full frontal nudity, only! I do not photograph masturbation or sexual acts of any kind! When men take off their clothes for me, that’s enough!

B: Do you think erections can be viewed as artistic?

LENU: Many of my subjects become aroused when they take off their clothes in front of me. And some stay erected throughout the course of the session. Erections can be natural, artistic and very sensual. I just don’t make the erection my center of interest.

B: Your own work centers mostly on male nudity, but it is done in a way that is not typically seen. How would you described your style?

LENU: A reporter once described my style as, “Playgirl meets Gentlemen’s Quarterly.”

I never focus on the fact that my subjects are nude. The nudity takes a backseat to capturing the unique beauty of my subject, what he is expressing and the composition. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is when my subject views the product of our efforts and instead of seeing himself (naked)...he sees art!

B: You have a variety of different types and few, if any, are the typical physique model variety. What types of men are you attracted to when it comes to your work?

LENU: I am not attracted to any particular type of man. My aim is to discover and capture the beauty, sensuality and unique essence of the subject that I am working with. Of course, I insist that my subjects are in good physical condition. But, huge muscles and chiseled facial features are not required to create a sensual, appealing image. But, I am most attracted to masculine subjects who have never posed nude.

B: Where do you find most of your models?

LENU: Most of my subjects are referred my models that I have worked with, their friends and family members. Some contact me through my website: http://www.hunkfest.com Others, I discovered while performing everyday activities! I am great at spotting men with potential, but, I am not good at asking them to pose nude for me. So, I advertise and rely on my (HunkHunters International) talent scouts!

B: Is it a requirement to pose nude to work with you?

LENU: Full frontal nudity is never a requirement to work with me! But, even those models who are only interested in fitness and fashion images or assignments, should be open to some form of provocative or semi-nude exploration. A subject that can be totally comfortable in front of the camera with nothing on, will be far more likely to project naturally and comfortably with their clothes on. Besides, I need to know that my subjects trust me completely. My goal is to establish an open and honest rapport.

B: Do you find that models who pose nude are confident or is this something that just comes across on camera?

LENU: That is what I appreciate most about photographing men! Regardless of how physically striking they may appear, often they are surprised at how confident and sensual they appear in their images. My job is to put them at ease and gain their trust. I am confident enough for both of us and I am the one looking through the lens of the camera. I will not release the shutter if the model does not appear confident!

B: How do you prepare your models for the shoots you do?

LENU: I am more relaxed and comfortable when the model knows exactly what to expect from the moment he arrives to the completion of the photography session. I prefer working with the model alone. Which is not usually a luxury I am afforded when shooting a magazine or calendar layout. However, in either situation, I ask the model to remove all of his clothes as soon as he arrives. This allows for him to get comfortable at his leisure, and before long, become totally relaxed in front of me and whoever else is involved in the session. If we are alone, while I am styling his hair and applying his makeup, I try to develop a rapport by letting him know as much about me as possible. I ask him questions about his background and goals for the future, while interjecting as much humor in the conversation as possible. If the studio is full of strangers, I become his protector and make sure he is treated with the utmost respect. By the time we are ready to shoot, he knows that I respect and appreciate him and hold him in the highest regard. During the session, I have developed a style and mannerism that reassures him that he is giving me exactly what I need to create outstanding images…or not!

B: Where do your concepts come from? Is this something you plan in advance or do you let the sessions happen organically?

LENU: Though, I start every session with a vague concept or direction in mind, I never allow myself to become locked into following any preconceived notion of what the finished image should look like. What motivates me most is following some unexpected creative energy that comes out of nowhere. So much is the direct result of a collaborative effort: …an expression, a body movement, a lighting effect and my ability to recognize and capture the moment before it is gone and can never be recreated. So, more than keeping to a plan, I suppose, I do let the sessions happen organically!

B: Not all of your images contain nudity. You range from athletic portraits to classic nudes, to more artistic style imagery. Do you have (a) preference when it comes to the types of images you do?

LENU: I have always preferred shooting nude and semi-nude erotic images. I mainly shoot portraits, fitness and fashion images to show more versatility in my subjects’ portfolios. Many industry professionals look for shots that they can use to sell the model as mainstream high-fashion, athletic or commercial candidates for assignments. These images do not take nearly as much creativity as the stylized artistic images. Naturally, as an artist I derive far more satisfaction from creating images that or unlike any images that other artist have already created. And the process is more challenging.

B: How did you get interested in photography?

LENU: As an Art Director, I could not find a photographer that could capture my vision.

So, I enrolled in a photography course at UCLA and tested until I developed a style.

B: Which artists from the past and which current ones inspire you the most?

LENU: No artist has inspired me more than Victor Skrebneski. My lighting style is very similar to the lighting Skrebneski uses for his Chicago International Film Festival series of black and white images. I may have even borrowed Skrebneski’s “naked men in tank-tops” concept for my HUNKFEST E-xhibition promotion. As for current artist, there are many that I find outstanding and inspirational: rSEANd PHOTOGRAPHY, pascal d ameyal, David Vance studio, Luis Rafael Photography, Mark Jenkins Photo, PICSESSIONS and wagnerLA are definite standouts!

B: Have you incorporated any of their influences into your own work?

LENU: So far, I have only incorporated the influences of Victor Skrebneski. However, I am anxious to test some of the more natural characteristics depicted in some of the current artists’ work.

B: Our readers might not be familiar with some of your branding. What is clubLENU and HunkHunters International?

LENU: During the early nineteen nineties, while photographing fashion portfolios for modeling agencies and nude/erotic layouts for magazines and calendars… I formed, the original clubLENU.

The club was mainly made up of attractive men with potential and enthusiasm but lacked the funds to pay me to shoot their modeling portfolios. We started out by doing what is commonly known as trade/test shoots. Only a modest amount of money changed hands… mostly, the photographer and model work for each other as an exchange of services. The model received professional fashion photographs for their portfolios. And, in exchange, they would agree to pose for my provocative art images. Full frontal nudity was not required… but, the models had to sign releases.

It soon became apparent that the men were far more interested in posing for the provocative images. They started to suggest nude and semi-nude concepts of their own. And each model had attractive male relatives or friends that wanted to join clubLENU!

At that time, however, I was pursuing a career in another industry. After working with the men for about a year, the effort became overwhelming. I had no time to market the art that was being created! And the cost of maintaining a studio that was hemorrhaging money while receiving death threats for promoting the project in the mainstream media proved to be too much to justify continuing the effort.

Nevertheless, the men had awesome professional fashion portfolios that many used to land agents and assignments. Over the years, they’ve brought many smiles to my face as I have opened the morning newspaper or browsed through magazines.

I am very grateful for the lessons of the original members of clubLENU! My E-xhibition, STOP THE VIOLENCE...GET THE NAKED TRUTH, features the artwork of my original team. These courageous men, with such diverse backgrounds… believed in my vision! We thoroughly enjoyed exploring and developing the ideas that evolved into each image. The premature discontinuation of our efforts is a decision that I have always regretted!

So, after a several decades long hiatus, I have decided to resurrect clubLENU!
This effort is my attempt to continue their legacy! These men taught me to appreciate the “joy” that came from sharing my vision with them… their families and their friends.

However, this time around…there is a method to my madness and a new purpose! Instead of an exchange of services, the models and I will work together to create the best in erotic male art…for calendars, books, private parties and live exhibitions!

And, members of clubLENU will share in the profits as full partners. We will also raise funds to support charitable organizations that bring awareness to Domestic Violence Abuse issues.

I have found that I, particularly, enjoy working with men that were discovered by everyday people who understand and appreciated my work. In jest… I, affectionately, call my devoted and enthusiastic “talent scouts“… HunkHunters! HunkHunters International is, simply, our team of supporters/talent scouts!

Where did the name “HUNKFEST” come from? I often organized intimate informal gatherings to afford the men (models) an opportunity to show our work and appreciation to the people responsible for discovering them. These private parties were wild celebrations that we all looked forward to. At one such party, surrounded by very attractive men, one of my most prolific female HunkHunters, very aptly, dubbed the gathering a “GODDAMN HUNKFEST!”

clubLENU and HunkHunters International are light-hearted, free-spirited works in progress… to showcase my style of photography, raise funds for charity and discover new talent. .

B: You are also highly outspoken in your fight against domestic violence. You are launching a controversial E-xhibition to draw attention to the issue. What will this entail?

LENU: Well, I would like to do far more than this initial effort. Nearly one-third of all women murdered in the United States in recent years were victims of a current or former intimate partner. On average, more than three women a day are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends. Sadly Nevada ranks No. 1 in the rate of women murdered by men for a second year in a row, according to a study by the Violence Policy Center.

B: How did you get involved in the domestic violence issue? Has this always been a passion of yours?

LENU: My father was an alcoholic and a habitual batterer. Though, I was never physically abused by my father, I was a mama’s boy and shared the pain and humiliation my mother suffered as a victim. Through years of therapy and spiritual work, I have learned to forgive and even love my father. But, I will always remember the horror of living in a violently abusive environment. Then, my mother had nowhere to go for help! So, I am passionate about letting victims of domestic abuse know that they do not have to continue to live in abusive situations. Now, there are excellent organizations that can help. My goal is the raise funds to benefit these organizations.

B: What are 5 things that you value most in your life?

LENU: Five things that I value most in life are my sobriety (I have been clean and sober for 13 years); my spiritual connection to a higher power; the love of my family, close friends and my partner; my good health and the courage to follow my dreams. You were wise not to ask me what I am grateful for. That list would be much too long!

B: What is the best lesson you’ve learned in life?

LENU: It is not arrogant, but humble, to accept God’s gifts and allow them to be expressed. We are all here on God’s earth to love, forgive and accept one another as we are! We are as God created us, no mistakes we have ever made or anyone’s judgments or negative opinions about us can in any way determine who we are or change our value. It is not arrogant to believe that we are infinitely creative, brilliant and potentially perfect through the Grace of God. In fact, it would be arrogant to think otherwise because what God has created cannot possibly be less than perfect! I have had a lot of judgment thrown my way. I have learned that we do not serve the world by taking on the judgments of others.

B: What advice would you give to artists just starting out?

LENU: Shoot a lot! Respect and appreciate your subjects! Never stop learning!

B: In addition to the E-xhibition, what projects are coming up in 2012?

LENU: A male calendar, book (UrbanNudists) and Las Vegas Strip Club (clubLENU) featuring male models instead of male strippers! Full Frontal Nudity is Required!

2011 - THE YEAR IN REarVIEW

In July 2009, I started BLISS based on a simple idea, which was to celebrate the artists, models and performers that caught my attention. I love photography, especially male image work since that is the area that my own art is focused. There are so many great sites online that showcase the beauty of the male form like Beautiful Mag, Ooh La La Mag, AOM, Favorite Hunks, Men and Photographers, ModelJock and Paragon Men, to name a few, and each of these sites does a phenomenal job. I have even had the privilege of being featured on all of them except ModelJock, which is run by one of my favorite photographers, Mark Edwards. But as much as I love each of these wonderful sites, I wanted something just a little bit different.

It is easy to just appreciate the photos either for the technique, the creativity or the gorgeous men, but as an artist, I was also interested in the people behind the images and the process that went into taking these photos from the conceptual stage to the final product. I wanted the opportunity to get to know these people who inspire me with their talent and beauty and to express my own appreciation. I also figured that if I was interested in more than just the visual, others might be as well, so BLISS was created and debuted with a model named J Phoenix whose beauty has captivated me for some time.

The real beauty of BLISS, for me, is that it allowed me to forge contacts and build relationships with a community of people whose work is such a huge part of my daily existence. I met, and later photographed the one and only Eric Rensburg after featuring him in the magazine. I got to know Desi Arnaz of Zedneram, as well as Ron Reyes who turned the tables and interviewed me for a feature. Industry legend, Greg Weiner was featured along with some personal favorites like Joseph Smileuske, Jay Plogman, Steven D. Hill, Guy Tang and Vic Rocco.

This magazine is a labor of love and great deal of work goes into creating the interviews and features. It is continuously evolving, and hopefully improving. 2011 was a big year and featured more models and photographers than I have in the prior years. I made a conscious decision to include all types, not just what is typically seen on a site like this, because I love diversity. Since the New Year marks a time of change for many people, the first artist featured, Photofreedom is known for the freshness of his images. The photos are generally devoid of any help from Photoshop, presenting the models au natural. This so called lack of polish was raw, intimate and eye catching.

January would be most remembered for the next feature of model Landon Taylor, also known as Paul Boulon, who offered the most erotic images of the year. His boy next door looks were a stunning contrast to the sexual inhibition on display, which was good enough to tide readers over through February, since the new issue would not arrive until March.

The big news in the month of March was the announcement that model and porn star, Turk Mason was retiring his porn alter ego and continuing his career as himself, Frank Fanucchi. While the initial reception was great, it took a little while for people to discover BLISS. The turning point came when I did a special fan mag edition for Turk, who has been photographed by many of the luminaries, such as Justin Monroe and Dylan Rosser. It was one of my favorite features because a great deal of communication went into making it happen, and it was the biggest feature I had attempted up to that point and remains so even now. His feature was such a huge boost for the magazine that I was beyond thrilled when he decided to officially break the news of his retirement in BLISS with an exclusive interview. I always found him to be very candid, but he opened up even further about his experiences within the industry and his life, so the title “The Importance of Being Frank” held a double meaning.

As an artist, it can feel like walking a tightrope when it comes to the lasting impression you want people to have you and your work. There will always be certain images that your audience gravitates towards and when they are of an erotic nature you can be unfairly pigeonholed in the minds of the viewers that these are the main focus of your work. It is a fact that I have had to deal with regarding my own photos, but even I found myself in need of a lesson when it came to the work of XCESSSTUDIO. I was drawn to his more provocative work, but this is by no means all he wants to be known for, and he made that point perfectly clear during his interview. I am a fan of all of his work but I realized that I was zeroing in on just one aspect of his incredible talent. I learned a great deal about my own perception during that interview.

March closed out with a model whose face is familiar on the internet even if his name is not. Oocelot has been featured in a plethora of blogs, and portions of his interview are often included. He is another uninhibited soul with that something special that appeals to nude photographers, like Mark Henderson and his appeal continued to draw readers throughout the remainder of 2011.

I discovered the art of Javi Giovanni by chance on Model Mayhem, under his brand name Ultra Exposed when I did a Christmas feature in 2010 with Cuban model, Ralfy Lords. What makes Ralfy unique in the modeling game is that he stands a mere 5’1” tall, and that he poses nude. The first images I saw were from Ultra Exposed so I decided to familiarize myself with more of Javi Giovanni’s work. I discovered that Ralfy was not the only short model that he photographed, and that he appeared to lean towards Latinos. The overall feel had a distinct Miami flavor, and his use of props, most specifically candy or paint, added the perfect hints of color. He also incorporated classic technique, even in his erotic work with fantastic results, so he was my first choice to start out the month of June.

I have been asked why I do not feature more of my own work in BLISS and the answer is that my main focus has and always will be the work of others. This was not a self indulgent venture meant for self promotion and even though I would love to show more of myself, I try to stay in line with the original vision. A few times a year, my photographs will crop up as they did in a feature on Lawrence Boudweau, who used to be a commercial model in New York. A man with the looks, the physique, the brains and talent, Larry is an amazing singer with a Masters degree in music. He is also one of my all time favorite models to work with due to his easy going personality and humor.

August began with a feature of photographer Jay Rickard whose use of light and shadow fascinates me in that they are the focal points of his images just as much as the models are. One of the main facets of an artists’ port that attracts me is model choice and when I find those that do not merely shoot the standard definitions of beauty within the guidelines of modeling, I get hooked. I often ask the photographers what they look for when choosing models and I remember Jay saying that faces were important to him, but not in terms of beauty - they needed to have character. I confess that it was one of the best answers I had ever gotten to that question.

Anyone who is familiar with male imagery is probably just as familiar with the name Rick Day, whose images of beautiful male models is legendary within an industry filled with talented shooters. Rick is so well known and sought after that his latest book, Players Two had a huge launch party in New York City that was attended by celebrated models and photographers alike. Bruno Gmunder, who published the book, used an image Rick shot of my number one model, Luis Perrusquia in the promotional campaign, and almost every male model I’ve interviewed mentions Rick Day as one of the photographers they would most like to work with.

It was a series of images that Rick shot of model Matthew Kirk that led me to contact him about being featured in BLISS. Matthew is another visual contradiction in that he can effortlessly go from Boy Next Door, to Fashion Model, to Sensual and Erotic Nude Model without being typecast in a particular genre. In the entertainment industry, he would be referred to as a triple threat because he is also a trained dancer, singer and actor with a degree in musical theater to back up his beauty. He has done some rather provocative nudes with Rick Day, but his feature was somewhat of a tease for the readers. A few of his nudes were included, but the erotic ones by Rick were not because he wanted people to focus on his body of work and not just an aspect of his body. With a little diligence, you can find those images online and I can assure you it would be worth the effort.

September marked another turning point for BLISS. Loyal readers will be aware that the cover would change with each feature because I felt that each of these people deserved the spotlight. I was unaware until this point that the magazine was moving up in terms of cache, or that GayDemon had reviewed it three times favorably. It wasn’t until I read an interview with a model on another site who said that two of the sites he most wanted to be featured on were Beautiful Mag and BLISS because they showed the highest respect to the subjects. It was extremely flattering, especially since this venture is not even close to being in the league with a powerhouse like Beautiful Mag, but it did change the way I thought about how and what I was presenting. The first change would be just one cover per issue, and the second would be branding the images to the magazine as a reference point. Now the hard part would be deciding who actually gets the cover.

There is a list I have of models that I am completely head over heels about and one of them was still relatively new to the industry, but I had no doubt about wanting him for the cover of the September issue. The tagline was HEAT and the model was David Davila, who I will talk about later. First up, however, is a young man named Drew Chapman who is the older brother of another star model of mine, Brock Chapman. When Ron Reyes turned the tables on me in 2010 with an interview and feature of my own work, Brock was the star of that issue. He would later work with Thomas Synnamon and Karl Simone but he was the face and physique most associated with my brand. His brother, Drew, is taller and built more like the football player that Brock actually is, but his personality is far less outgoing, nor is he as comfortable displaying his body, so he has not shot nude images. Drew was featured on my Facebook fan page and the response to him was so intense that I decided to give him more exposure in BLISS. As I said, I only feature my own work a few times a year so it was a bit tough to decide who would get my second feature. In the end, I chose Drew.

There are certain models that you can’t help but notice simply because of their physical blessings, like Trevor Adams or Simon Dexter, but I often find that I am drawn to individuals because they are the total opposite of what the standard of beauty might imply. I like when models have a different look, which I find beautiful on a personal level, and one of those that grabbed my attention was a young man named Joseph Alexander. Once again, it was a double reward as in the case of Ralfy Lords, because the images I saw were by a photographer in Atlanta named Louis whose brand name is TAKEURPICTURE. It is unfortunate that in this day and age there are still photographers who do not shoot ethnic models, but Louis is one of those who have filled a part of the void by focusing on them, almost exclusively. Joseph Alexander turned out to one of those models and in his case, slipping into various characters is what motivates him in front of the camera. Of course, part of what motivates the viewer is his comfort level when it comes to shedding his clothes, as well as the hefty endowment on display.

The real star of September, however, was the aforementioned, David Davila. This beautiful man is a muscular Latino who resides in Chicago and not since J Phoenix, Turk Mason/Frank Fanucchi, GIONYC and Eric Rensburg have I been so unabashedly smitten with a model that I was featuring. (I would have this feeling again later with Gio De Marco and Victor Po.) When I feature models I try not to lean towards my personal preference in looks beyond the camera, but David is 100% my type when it comes to height and looks. I have never been into the muscular physique outside of my art but his entire package is irresistible. In fact, I could gush about David until I was blue in the face and you would not be able to stand reading anymore so I will concentrate on what made the feature so special.

What I found most enjoyable about interviewing David was discovering genuine humility that went past the initial feature. He is on my personal wish list of models to work with, not only because of his looks but because he keeps in contact and is supportive and encouraging when it comes to the art of others. One of the questions I always ask is to list 5 things that even people who know you would be surprised to learn and I do so in hopes that the answers will make the reader consider that same question in regards to their own lives. I think it’s fascinating to think about how much or how little the people around us truly know our private lives. David’s answer was priceless when he said his favorite movie was The Little Mermaid.

One of the biggest pluses of his feature was the inclusion of photos by amazing photographers like Allan Spiers, Pat Lee, Jay Plogman (who had a cover feature in December 2009), and KJ Heath who shot the cover of David and introduced me to Jeff Rieber who would be featured in the Holiday issue at the end of the year. I guess I am not the only one to recognize the beauty of David because he still remains in the top 5 posts of the month as the New Year begins.

I wanted to do more issues devoted to specific individuals like I had done with Turk Mason, and the next two to receive that distinction were model GIONYC and photographer Joseph Smileuske. This would be followed by a man in a class of his own, Desi Arnaz of Zedneram, and then the incomparable Justin Monroe, who even got a mini fairy tale written in his honor for that issue. 2011 could have been a year with nothing but issues devoted to individuals but I thought that might get tiresome for the readers so I chose carefully. First up was another photographer who is on the minds of many male models as someone they would love to shoot with, Ev Dylan.

You can’t mention Ev Dylan without mentioning model DW Chase (and vice versa) so they shared the spotlight on this particular issue. DW is a model that pretty much defies all conventional thought on what a model should look like, and this has worked to his advantage. Everything about him goes against the grain including his celibacy, in spite of some of his sexually charged images, his California surfer dude looks, his height and his decision to retain his body hair at a time when almost all models were completely shaved. DW is also more of an intellect who shuns crowds and leans towards introspection. I loved working with him because he was hands on during the process, which is always helpful, and I was given the chance to debut his final shoot with Ev after working together for well over a decade.

Ev, on the other hand, was far more difficult to pin down. This man is BUSY, constantly traveling and shooting so finding time to do a 3 part interview created some complications. In fact, that issue is still not complete due to Ev’s schedule so stay tuned for part 2 and 3, as well as a review of his gorgeous book LUST.

One day when I was updating my port on Model Mayhem and looking at the work of photographers I admire, I came across of photo of a man standing naked in front of a large mirror. I could not explain why this image stood out for me specifically, but the playful aspect of it left an impression. A year later I saw what would land on my list of favorite male images featuring a guy hanging off the side of a train by Kurt R. Brown. It would take a bit more time to realize that these two images were of the same model because he had changed his profile name. He would change it once again and the official unveiling, so to speak, would happen during his feature in BLISS. The model is Gio De Marco.

Now Gio is another one of those models that I have no qualms about admitting I have a special affinity for. I love everything about this guy, from his look to the way he brings out something special in his images. He is a good friend of Desi Arnaz which has made him a staple in the ZEDNERAM world, and our communication on Facebook revealed that he is just as endearing when he is not modeling. In some cases, you work with a model and the chemistry goes beyond the art and you develop a friendship. Gio is exactly the type of model that you would hope that could happen with.

The next feature on Immortal Images was long overdue. We had been in communication for most of the year discussing our mutual admiration for each other’s work and I expressed interest in including him in BLISS. Needless to say, it was a hectic year for me and the target date kept getting pushed further and further away. This man is more than just a talented artist with a style all his own, he is also incredibly supportive of all artists and gives heartfelt feedback that is positive and inspiring. He shoots real people, as I call them, and maintains an aesthetic that is both raw and artsy, making his models appear like people you might know. It is this level of intimacy that makes his work so special, in my eyes.

I wanted to do an entire issue with photographer David Wagner whom I have deep admiration for as an artist, but the models became roadblocks. The internet is a wonderful thing but its vastness and the ability to manipulate images has created what David refers to as “nude remorse” for some models who pose and then later regret that decision when the photos end up posted all over the web, sometimes with digital adjustments. There are also models who do not want to be featured on blogs, in spite of the level of positive exposure some can provide, preferring only to have their images published in print format. There is nothing wrong with any of these decisions, and everyone should have the right to maintain some control over their work, but it made it impossible to showcase some of the most memorable shots that David has produced in the issue. I have referenced David in some of the interviews I have been featured in such as Paragon Men, Beautiful Mag and NEXT and I call him “the one to watch” because his style is instantly recognizable and his output consistent. He has a portfolio filled with beautiful models and is a photographer of choice for quite a few book covers. His feature also marked a rather quick return of model DW Chase in a pictorial shot by David.

And so the end of the year arrived, much sooner than I would have liked, and I was preparing the Holiday issue. I had known since early summer who I most wanted to grace the cover because I have been a huge fan of his work since the first day I joined Model Mayhem and saw one of his images. In my opinion, there are very few people like Victor Po and I have watched in pure admiration as he has transformed himself throughout his modeling career. It was no surprise to me when he hooked up with Justin Monroe and even less of a surprise that he would become one of Justin’s true superstars. His feature, that came with a fold out cover, included a large number of shots by Justin (who is the most featured photographer on BLISS), as well as those by super photographer Mark Henderson, GR Pro Photo, Travis Dudley, JNAWSH, Michael Kilgore, and the phenomenally talented Murray Grondin. It was a star studded extravaganza that was perfect for the holiday. A gift to me and the readers.

Victor is a man’s man who exudes masculinity, sensuality and pure erotic heat, but can turn down the temperature and play the Latino pretty boy or high fashion underwear model as easily as flicking a switch. He has always been on my list of models that blow me away with their work and I can only guess at how much further he is going to go in 2012. No matter what he does, I will definitely be watching and loving every minute of it.

The problem with having Victor centered on which models I could feature along with him and not have them overshadowed. I have to thank KJ Heath for providing the first answer when he suggested Jeff Rieber, and model/dancer in Chicago. Jeff is more of a classic beauty when put alongside Victor, but his dancer’s physique and willingness to also pose nude was hot enough to interest the viewers. He is entirely new to the modeling scene but has since been chosen as a finalist on the model search 2012 at Favorite Hunks.

The other choice was a beautiful Asian model named Jay Jam who also fits into the fitness category. I was aware of some of his work with ZEDNERAM but nothing more until we started working on his feature. Jay was a huge success, even managing to topple the mighty Peter Le in views for the week.

There’s nothing like a few surprises when it comes to gifting and since it was the holiday season, I wanted to include two for the readers and they came from two of my favorite photographers, FLYFOTO and Ron Reyes, who provided some naughty but beautiful holiday themed images to make the yuletide gay. The last gift came from me with a nude Santa shot of the one and only Eric Rensburg. And since the holiday issue was heading towards taking me off Saint Nick’s nice list, I included the erotic Santa images by none other than Gert Kist, which might have given new meaning to the phrase “white Christmas” for some viewers.

So that was the year in BLISS. 2012 is already looking to be just as, if not hotter, starting off with Chris Teel and (spoiler alert) next months issue featuring Haringman+ and a sexy valentine spread by a surprise photographer. I hope you enjoyed what 2011 had to offer and will continue to enjoy and support the magazine. Here’s wishing nothing but the best to all my readers in 2012.

BLISS TALKS WITH WEST PHILLIPS

It’s time to start thinking about putting the Holiday decorations away, or actually doing it if you are the proactive type. At this point, most of us should be rested up from our New Year’s celebrations, having nursed the hangovers in some cases, and concentrating on the idealistic resolutions that we made and wondering how long they will last or which are the same ones from the year before. And what better way to start off 2012 than with the number one model ever to be featured here at BLISS…the super sexy superstar, Peter Le.

Photographer West Phillips has had the lucky privilege of working with this incredibly beautiful and immensely popular model on a number of occasions and decided to share some of those images he shot for Peter's web site - PeterFever.com - with the readers of BLISS. His portfolio is quite diverse and showcases a broad range of talent, in addition to a well trained eye for spotting beauty, be it scenery or an individual and capturing it in a way that is both beautiful and impressive.

West took some time out of his busy schedule to talk about his collaborations with Peter as well as his photography career.

BLISS: Peter Le is one of the most popular models ever to be featured in BLISS. What was your experience working with him like?

West Phillips: I first worked with Peter this past March and have since worked with him several times. I was impressed by how professional and focused Peter was from the very start. When you spend that much time with someone in such an intimate and personal way, a friendship develops and you find that you both are on the same page and share the same vision.

B: What was the concept of your shoot together?

WP: This particular shoot was our 2nd time working together. I had already discussed shooting Peter with the editor of DNA Magazine, so this shoot was specifically for that. Initially I had a warm and sunny California concept in mind, however being in San Francisco, there's no telling what the weather will be like. We used the beautiful Sutro Baths ruins by Ocean Beach. In the end, it was the contrast of Peter's incredible physique against the backdrop of the jagged rocks, concrete and misty ocean that really worked. He was a good sport and survived, despite the fact that he was freezing the entire time!

B: What initially drew you to Peter in terms of wanting to work with him?

WP: It's a funny story, actually. I was living in Australia at the time and was planning my return to San Francisco. I was networking and model hunting online and came across Peter's Facebook page. I had no idea who he was, but was struck by his image, so I sent him a random email asking if he'd like to work together. Before our first shoot, I had friends who were so excited and couldn't believe I was going to be working with him! I think it helped me that I had no pre-conceived notion or idea of who he was, just that he was a hot guy I wanted to shoot! lol

B: What do you consider to be the most appealing aspects about Peter physically?

WP: Peter has the whole package! He has this incredibly sexy muscular physique that most people dream about, yet I think all of that would be nothing without his beautiful face and smile.

B: What about on the personal side? What do you consider to be his best trait?

WP: Peter has become a master of crossing boundaries and blurring the lines of sexuality. His looks and charm appeal to people of all genders, ages and races. Peter's natural ability to draw people in and to make them feel a personal connection with him is great. He's a very down to earth and friendly guy, despite the fact that he has fans lusting after him all over the world!

B: When did you first take up photography?

WP: I started photography when I first moved to San Francisco in January 2010.

B: Is your main focus on male imagery?

WP: While I have done a great deal of travel photography and more photo journalism style work, my main focus over the past year has really been nurturing my male portraiture work.

B: Do you have any photographers that you gain inspiration from?

WP: When I was in Australia I was fortunate to have started working with DNA Magazine. One day the editor took me over to meet Pedro Virgil, an incredible photographer based in Sydney. The 3 of us spent the afternoon at Pedro's house, talking about photography, models and international travel. I was blown away by his work and the direction his career was going. I often think back to that day and each time I draw inspiration from not only Pedro's work, but his ambition and success.

B: Peter is probably best known for his nude images. Do you shoot nudes?

WP: I shot nudes before I met Peter, though not a lot. Peter was instrumental in helping me cross that threshold and tap into a different, more adult market. In addition to shooting Peter nude, I have shot other nude models for his website as well. These days I get a lot of requests for private nude shoots from various clients.

B: How would you describe your style?

WP: My style definitely varies, depending who I'm shooting. I think the overall idea the viewer gains from my work is artistic, creative and cinematic. I try to incorporate the setting and background into the photo as much as the model themselves. I would like the photo to be beautiful even without the model in it.

B: There are quite a few male models on the landscape now that photographers are very familiar with. Are there any in particular that you would like to work with in the future?

WP: While I'm always up for shooting a beautiful model, recently I've been shooting more personalities and celebrities, of sorts. The next time I'm in Asia I'd love to shoot Chaiwat Tob Thongsaeng.

B: I remember him from the film Bangkok Love Story. He's definitely a beauty. Sites like Model Mayhem give the impression that modeling is an aspiration of so many individuals. What physical aspects do you think are most important for those trying to get into the industry?

WP: I think these days there are so many different aspects of the industry one can get into. Whether it's print modeling, runway shows, events or different online venues, there are so many different options out there for people.

B: What’s more important for your work, a great physique or a gorgeous face?

WP: When I'm doing physique work, then of course the priority is the physical, but a good looking face is also necessary. In the past I've had some guys approach me who want to work together who were in great shape, but unfortunately I just didn't feel the whole package was there. Of course working with someone like Peter can spoil it for the other guys! lol As I move into different genres of my photography, there are times where the focal point needs to be a pretty face and not the chiseled abs, believe it or not!

B: Now that it’s 2012, what projects do you have lined up?

WP: I recently worked with out gay pro soccer player David Testo in Miami Beach and he and I are planning on collaborating on another shoot very soon. In addition to that, I am working on some projects here in Miami Beach to prepare for this year’s Pride event, which I'm very excited about!

‘Tis the season for dashing through the snow and dreaming of a white Christmas, but this holiday just got much hotter. Miami based model extraordinaire, Victor Po is the gift that keeps on giving as he makes his rounds from one photographer to the next, creating images that are sensual, arresting, erotic or just plain ole classically beautiful. He is no stranger to those behind the lens and many would include him on their wish list of people to work with, but his inclusion in Monroeland, the exclusive universe created by master artist and provocateur, Justin Monroe, has dramatically increased his recognition factor, and even landed him the coveted title of Model of the Month at Monroeland.com.

In today’s market, beautiful males are somewhat commonplace, and an impressive physique can be found just about anywhere thanks to the popularity of gyms, so it takes more than just pure physicality to make a mark and stand out in a crowd of fitness models. We all can admire a beautiful image, but the subject has to give much more than your basic poses to become memorable. One look at Victor’s incredible range proves that he is equally at home playing the muscled Latino pretty boy as he is when surrounded by religious props and symbolism that has been sexed up to the extreme. Photographers are often pushed into the background when it comes to name recognition but like directors, there are those whose names are more famous than the people they are filming. If I were asked to describe him with just one word, I would say fearless. Other adjectives that fit aptly include uninhibited, adaptable, rugged, sexy, handsome, beautiful, sensual, masculine…actually the list could go on and on because it is too limiting to use one word to define the essence of Victor, and this is precisely what makes him such a superstar in front of the camera. It is also what keeps the viewers on the lookout for any new images, waiting to see how each new photographer chooses to showcase him. BLISS: You are everywhere all of a sudden, most notably as one of Justin Monroe’s superstar models. How did the collaboration between you and Justin come about?

VICTOR PO: Well we started chatting online. He told me that he had some ideas that will like to shoot with me, so, over a year ago he flew me to Los Angeles, and from there the rest its history

B: You’ve done so many different editorials, a cover for Vovka Magazine, and the Rock Bottom calendar with Justin that I want to talk about a few of them. One of my favorites is the Pony Boy series that landed on the cover of Beautiful Mag. What was that shoot like?

VP: That was my first shoot ever, and like everything in Monreoland was just over the top. Hair, makeup, lights, people running around, was just like living a dream. I felt just like it was not real, too good to be true, but, It was happening!

B: What about the Room Service series? How did that shoot go?

VP: That was my second shoot with Mr. Monroe, I went to Las Vegas, were we met, and let me tell you something, the ice cream was so delicious, I ate it all, but one of the funny things about that shoot was the one afternoon I was at the pool, and this girl saw me walking by and she started screaming "Look it's The Situation (from Jersey Shores), so I turned around and I said to her " NO, I'm not" I laugh so hard, because it was so funny the way she acted.

B: I think viewers who were familiar with your work were most surprised by the Atheist and Beef Injection editorials. They may really be shocked by the new Trucker Fucker series with Justin as a model opposite you. Was it easy to transition to these more sexually provocative types of images?

VP: I do consider myself an artist, and when we did shoot Atheist we didn't try to offend anyone, we were just creating great images, I know that people feel different, but like my mom always told me "son, you are not sugar to be liked by everybody", and religions it's kind of a taboo for people, it's just like sex, we cannot please everybody because people believe and like different think. I myself believe in God, and I think he's the one guiding me to success.

The story behind Trucker Fucker is just unusual, I'm the first guy that Mr. Monroe shoot hairy, he confessed to me that in his whole career he never thought he was going to do it, so right after he did the images for his 2012 calendar, I went right straight to have a haircut, jumped in the shower and shaved my whole body, and Beef Injection came alive, Same images shoot the same day. It’s amazing how different are one from the other.

B: You obviously do not have an issue with nudity and have posed nude for other photographers like Murray! and Jeff Schuller. Why do you think the mainstream still has such a problem with male nudity, especially full frontal?

VP: It does take lots of balls to show your penis, its like guys are afraid to do it, like if there is something bad about it, nobody cares if a girl is naked but when a guy is, OMG. I do work for school of photography sometimes, and I love to see the students faces when I just show up naked, so funny, and the first thing they do it is look right down there, my penis, but in the end of the class nobody cares. "I'm a guy I have a penis", like every other male in the planet and I don't mind showing it. Of course it does take lots of self acceptance to do that, and in the beginning was also estrange for me, but I guess I got used to do it. So my friend just practices, practice, practice.....

B: Let’s take a step back for a moment and discuss how this all started. How did you first get into modeling?

VP: Well I used to model when I was 16 years old, but at 20 I moved to the states, so I just stopped, till, I few years back a friend of a friend bought a camera and he stopped by to show him, I was there and I did mention to him that I used to model, so he says let’s go out and let me take a couple of head shots of you, so we did, The following week he called me and say he created a modeling profile online for me, and well.....BOOM!!! it all started again. I always believe that "whatever is for you nobody it's going to take it away", and that's why it happen that way.

B: Do you remember what your first shoot was like? Were you nervous or just as exhibitionistic as you are now?

VP I don't believe I'm an exhibitionist, I'm a free spirit, but hell yeah I was so nervous, I felt like fainting, but It was just excitement, I believe, because after 2 minutes I LOVED IT!

B: Were you always interested in branching into nude modeling or is this something that developed over time?

VP: No, not at all, I took me a long time to find out what I was good at it, till I realized that everybody was calling me to do naked work, so I said " I must be good at this!!!!!

B: If you look back to the early days, where did most of your support and encouragement come from?

VP: You are going to hear something that you don't expect, but it all comes from my dad, although he never said to me "son, I want you to go to America and get naked' (LOL), he always supported me in everything that I wanted to do, never said no to anything. He always let me be how I was and respected me, even though he has a farm guy and very well known business man, and there I was, between cows and horses dancing to Madonna. He never ever said NO! That's why I do respect him so much, because he showed me and taught me to have respect, and every day I wish I had the chance to tell him again how proud I am of him and how much I love him, but I know he's looking down at me, and guiding me into the right direction. My last birthday I got his initial tattooed in my arm in his honor! I LOVE YOU DAD!

B: What about opposition? Did anyone try to discourage you regarding your decision to become a model?

VP: Never, ever, ever, although I have been told many times "NO", but through the years I did understand that I was not the right person for a job.

B: There is so much emphasis put on age in all forms of entertainment be it acting, dancing, singing or modeling, but you are just one of many examples that proves men over 30 are just as much, if not more so, beautiful, sexy and vibrant as those 10-15 years younger. Has age ever created any obstacles for you in terms of modeling?

VP: I personally never experienced that. There is a market for everybody and I can tell you that I know 70 year old people in better shape than I am. Don't you forget - 50's are the new 20's.

B: You are Hispanic. What is your ethnic background?

VP: I was born in Argentina, and my family is Italian-Spanish

B: The landscape is littered with non minority models while minorities continue to struggle to be noticed, in many cases. Has your ethnicity ever created barriers for you in this business?

VP: Not at all. Never had it happen to me. Thank God! I guess muscle Latino guys, we are in now!

B: You reside in Miami, which has a large Hispanic population, so this could actually turn the tables in some cases. Is the competition between Hispanic models more intense where you live?

VP: I don't compete with anyone, except with myself. I always try to top my work over and over.

B: One of my favorite photographers resides in Florida – Luis Rafael. Have you ever worked with him? If not, is this something you would like to do in the future?

VP: Not yet. I hope someday we can collaborate. Although our styles are the opposite, it would be interesting to see what it would come out of a shoot together. I'm sure something fantastic, because he is an awesome photographer.

B: Your resume reads like a who’s who list of photographers. In addition to Justin Monroe, Jeff Schuller, Murray! and Mark Henderson, you’ve also worked with Michael Kilgore, Paul Bryson, MiamiPhotoGuy, Culver Photography, Lewis Art and Photo and Jose Alexzander, to name a few. Are there any photographers on your personal wish list?

VP: I really would like to work with every photographer out there!!!!!

B: How do you prepare for a shoot with a new photographer?

VP: Diet and special workout always, I like to prepare for at list for a week, even though I'm always in shape, I'm never off season. I always believe working out should be a life style. You don't work out to look good, you work out to feel good, and looking good will came along the way.

B: Are you ever a part of the process in terms of coming up with a concept or are the ideas presented to you by the photographer?

VP: I have come up with some ideas just on my own. I like to put the "Po" touch always, but I do respect original ideas, and I always deliver 200% of myself.

B: You seem so uninhibited when it comes to your work, but have you ever been asked to do a shoot that you felt crossed the line?

VP: No, I'll never allow someone to cross the line. I'm old enough to know what is wrong or right, I think that is one of the benefits of being over 30 and still be in this business.

B: There are some photographers who shoot certain images for public consumption but others for their private collections. Are there photos of you that will never see the light of day due to how extreme they might be?

VP: NO

B: Justin has given you the opportunity to really inhabit characters in your images together. Is this more exciting or rewarding than standard posing?

VP: Of course it is. He gave me the opportunity to express myself to my full potential!

B: You’ve pushed the envelope so far lately that some may wonder what you could possibly do next. Is there a certain concept or type of shoot that you have yet to do that you’d like to be involved in?

VP: Not really, I'm always open to new ideas, so keep them coming please!

B: All photographers have muses, and these may change over time, but there’s always a relationship that develops that creates a desire to continue working with certain individuals. Which photographers, if any, over the years have you grown the most with and why?

VP: I became friends with all of them, although I have been spending so much time in Monroeland lately, and I have to admit that I have found a great friend in Justin Monroe! But every photographer that I have worked with is on speed dial, and I try to keep in touch with all of them.

B: Every experience is not necessarily a good one, and many models have been involved in shoots that they later regret or look back on less fondly. You don’t have to name names, obviously, but have you ever regretted or disliked any of the shoots you’ve been involved in?

VP: No.

B: If I asked you to pick 3 images that best represent who you are as a model today, which one’s would they be and why?

VP: All my images represent how Victor Po is!

B: Looking back on all you’ve done, what is the best lesson you’ve learned as a model?

VP: I learned to love myself and to respect life.

B: What advice would you give to a new model who wants to move forward?

VP: I'd tell them don't do anything you don't feel comfortable doing or something you will regret in the future. If you can't show your mom, it probably is not a good idea.

B: Speaking of models, are there any whose work stand out for you?

VP: I do learn from all of them

B: This forum has given me the opportunity to talk to so many different photographers, and you are on the wish list for quite a few of them, alongside Eric Rensburg, Luis Perrusquia, Simon Dexter, Trevor Adams, Ray Luis and a few others. Are you aware of the impact you are having and what it is that puts you guys at the top of the list?

VP: WOW!

B: The first image I ever saw of you was by GR Pro Photo with a red ball and I became an instant fan. I had the same reaction to model GIO NYC and J Phoenix. Each of you represents a different kind of beauty and I believe that viewers respond to it. In spite of this, are there any physical aspects that you wish you could change about yourself?

VP: I'm very happy with how I am and I never think how my life will be 'IF". I know that "IF” I was blond, blue eyes, and 6 feet tall my life would be different, but I also know it's not going to happen, so I do not focus on that, and I'm very thankful to God to be how I'm today.

B: Being exposed in a photo gives the impression to some that they “know” you. What are 5 things that the viewers would be surprised to learn about you based on what they might assume from your images?

VP: I like to cook, I'm very sentimental and I do cry very easy, I like to help people ( I'm normally the one that my friends call for advice), I'm very down to earth and a very realistic person.

B: You are currently in Justin Monroe’s first calendar “Rock Bottom”. What other projects can we look forward to from you before the end of the year and in the beginning of 2012?

VP: Well this year is over, but 2012 is going to be a busy one, projects such as Victor Po's calendar and Victor Po's book are in the talk.

B: Any last words for your fans?

VP: I really want to thank each and every one of them, because without them I would not be where I am today, and I also wouldn’t be the person that you guys help me to be. I really appreciate all the love and the good energy that they always give me. I l LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!!!

The definition of beauty is a question that is often asked here at BLISS and the revelation is not in the answers given, but in the fact that the opinions expressed showcase how diverse beauty is. In different parts of the world, specific traits can come to define the basis of attraction, and not surprisingly, the American standard of beauty is known well beyond the borders of the United States. Advertisers market to this standard, as do films and even photographers. It is not a secret that some photographers shoot non ethnic models exclusively, which in turn has led others to cater specifically to those that are overlooked by others. The shift is there and the inclusion of ethnic models has increased, although at a relatively slow pace.

African Americans and Latinos have finally reached a mainstream audience, though still not on an equal scale, but other minorities are still striving to be seen within the industry, most specifically Asian males. Last year, BLISS ran an entire issue dedicated to Asian men featuring the amazing Eric Rensburg , Guy Tang, Jeremy Tang and Peter Le. Ironically, Peter remains the most viewed feature on the BLISS site, and continues to be in the top three every month, which shows that the appeal is definitely there, even if the rest of the industry refuses to see it.

Filipino beauty, Jay Jam came to my attention on Facebook first and then Model Mayhem, and he possesses the look, physique and sex appeal that have made Eric, Guy, Jeremy and Peter so familiar to admirers of male art. He is equally comfortable in fashion spreads, but his body has put him more in the category of fitness model. Now he comes to BLISS as a holiday treat, but this gift is presented unwrapped.

BLISS: How did you first get interested in modeling?

Jay Jam: I have always loved to dance and eventually act and being in front of the camera is something that I love and not new to me. But somehow it was never pushed into its maximum potential. So eventually I joined a "physique" contest locally back home and have photographers take pictures of me, that's when I saw myself doing this. For me it’s more like a journal to see how my body is developing and now developing into an art form.

B: What was your first shoot like? Were you comfortable in front of the camera?

JJ: The very first shoot was of course nerve racking and very awkward. Honestly I was not all comfortable in front of the camera and back then I was still developing my body.

B: Most of your images show off your beautiful physique. Do you consider yourself a fitness model mainly?

JJ: Thank you but first and foremost I don't even consider myself a model. These are just a collection of pictures for now, something that I look at to see physically where my body is at. If it is called a fitness model mainly, thank you but that’s for now who knows what the next project will be.

B: You’ve worked with one of my favorite photographers, Desi Arnaz of Zedneram, who was featured here in BLISS. His images show off a different side of you. What was it like to work with Desi?

JJ: I am very honored that Desi gave time to do a shoot with me with his very busy schedule. To work with Desi is a dream come true for a model, such a creative, fun, respectful and professional individual.

B: Is there any particular shoot that you did that stood out as a positive learning experience? If so, what did it teach you?

JJ: Each shoot that I had is a positive learning experience for me. It has thought me how to work on my angle, which muscle part to contract and to work out even more to reach that ultimate improvement in my body.

B: Your profile states that you are based in Canada but you’ve traveled quite a bit for photo shoots. What is the best location you’ve been to so far?

JJ: I would say San Francisco, it's a city that I keep coming back and always have felt the love from its people.

B: If you could pick one photographer and one location for your dream shoot, who and where would it be?

JJ: Well I definitely know that place and that would be somewhere in Florida and as for the photographer Luis Rafael.

B: What is your ethnic background and where were you born?

JJ: I am Filipino and was born in the Philippines.

B: What led you to Canada?

JJ: My immediate family, siblings and parents are all here.

B: There’s Peter Le, Eric Rensburg, Guy Tang, Rob Trinh, Jeremy Tang and a few others who have become known within the industry, yet there still seems to be a lack of exposure for Asian males overall. Do you feel that Asian males are underrepresented within the industry?

JJ: Yes I do feel that we Asian males are underrepresented in the industry and thank you to these guys that they have started representing us in the industry, they are my inspirations.

B: It’s clear from your physique that you work out. Have you always been into fitness?

JJ: Yes I have always been into fitness. I have always pictured myself as to be that thin lanky man, if I can only find and show you that picture. Hypertension runs in the family, it's also why I have always wanted to be physically fit.

B: Do you follow a specific diet and regimen to stay in the shape you are in?

JJ: I believe in moderation in anything that I eat and so far my metabolism hasn't slowed down yet. But before photo shoots of course I have to prepare for that and I would usually cut down on carbohydrates one week.

B: Even the most disciplined models have a guilty pleasure. Do you have any vices?

JJ: After night out of drinking, I would indulge myself in all of the salty sweet spicy junk food that I can have...ice cream, hotdogs, pizza, chips etc.

B: What would you consider to be your best features?

JJ: I would say my abdominals and ass.

B: If you could change one thing about your appearance, what would it be?

JJ: I am constantly changing my appearance; I treat my body like a work of art. It’s constantly evolving.

B: Model’s always want to update their portfolios and finding new photographers is the best way to do it. Are there any photographers who you specifically want to work with?

JJ: Ed Freeman, Tom Bianchi, Don Pollard, Terry Hastings, Mark Edwards and Sean Dibble.

B: When did you decide that you were willing to pose nude?

JJ: I am willing to try most anything once and when I saw the first nude pictures that I did, from that point on it was journal to see how my body was evolving.

B: What was your first experience being nude in front of a camera like, and how does it differ from other shoots?

JJ: It was very liberating experience I must say and once you've done it most everything else is easy. But of course I haven't done every kind of shoot. It differs from a fashion shoot or other kinds because you really have to be aware how your body is during that shoot.

B: The photos that can be viewed in your public portfolio do not include full frontal images. Have you done full frontal? If you have, why haven’t you made them public? If not, is this something you are opposed to for yourself?

JJ: Yes I have done it. It is not public because the photographers and I have talked about having a mutual agreement and respect that if they need to publish a full frontal image that we should talk about it. I was born in a tropical country and my privates are not use to the four different seasons, especially winter.

B: What is the wildest concept that has ever been presented to you by a photographer?

JJ: I have yet to experience this, so far none.

B: All the photos I’ve seen of you have been solo images. Are you interested in doing duo or group shots?

JJ: Actually I already did a group shot way back home and yes I would be interested in doing a duo or a group shot again.

B: With the exception of fashion, duo shots have a tendency to border on the sensual. Would you be open to an erotic shoot with another model?

JJ: Sensual yes, erotic why not with another model but not pornographic.

B: Which shoot, if any, stands out the most for you to date and why?

JJ: I would say having a location shoot at Sutro Baths in San Francisco with Alec Joseph Bates as the photographer. The feeling of being photographed in one of the historic sites was such an amazing feeling and pictures turn out to be quite awesome.

B: If a new model contacted you for advice about the industry, what tips would you offer?

JJ: Hmmm, just be yourself, look for inspirations, be the best you can be and have fun!

B: Any last words for your fans and the people who will read this?

JJ: Fans? Are there any out there? A big heartfelt thank you and especially to the photographers I've worked with for believing in me, you made my dreams come into a reality. Lastly to you Sean - thank you for featuring me in BLISS. All the best in 2012!

KJ HEATH on JEFF RIEBER

Male image photographers love discovering new talent, especially when it is a model like Jeff Rieber who has such presence in front of the camera, as well as the willingness to step outside of a perceived comfort zone in order to create images that are dynamic and sensual. A dancer since his childhood, Jeff pretty much fell into modeling and discovered he enjoyed posing, in spite of the fact that his usual mode of performance involves far more movement.

KJ Heath is the man behind one of the most popular BLISS covers which features David Davila in the shower. His photos of Jeff are just as sensual, but incorporate a bit of the dancer side with poses accentuating his limber physique. I asked KJ what it was that made him want to work with Jeff, and a few other questions, and this is what he had to say about the experience.

“I wanted to shoot with Jeff because 1. I think he is extremely good looking 2. I thought he could add something to my portfolio and I could add something to his and 3. I LOVE shooting dancers because they usually have such amazing body awareness and know how to move. I met Jeff a year or so ago and over the past year I've seen his body transform. He is so much muscular. It was wonderful to see the transformation and I loved that when he felt he was ready, he asked to shoot with me. I really was honored.”

Working with a new model can be rewarding, but also daunting in that they are not always immediately comfortable in front of the camera. Any doubts about what Jeff could produce were immediately eliminated.

“Jeff was slightly nervous when we first started shooting. While he has worked with dance photographers, I really am his first fitness photographer. He wasn't sure what to expect. Jeff is a perfectionist so he really wanted to make sure he was meeting expectations.

“As a dancer Jeff is trained to perform and he brings a performer's energy to the shoot. He wanted direction and feedback and really took it well. He and I have another shoot scheduled in a couple weeks and I really look forward to the result.”

It is easy for the viewer to look at a photo of a beautiful model and immediately understand what the appeal is, but photographers are seeing mostly through the lens which provides a completely different viewpoint. When asked about his view of Jeff’s best features, KJ attributed much of it to his body.

“I think Jeff's best physical attribute is his symmetry. He has beautiful legs, shoulders, pecs, glutes... and it all is in beautiful proportion.”

JEFF RIEBER'S GIFT BASKET

BLISS: You are a dancer that just recently transitioned into modeling. What drew you in this new direction?

JEFF RIEBER: I actually never really intended to make the transition. A friend of mine models and I loved looking at his photos, so when the opportunity arose I thought it would be fun. Since my first shoot, things have kind of snowballed since.

B: Your photo shoot with KJ Heath is sexy and revealing. Were you comfortable showing this side of yourself on camera?

JR: Thank you! Being a dancer, I've always viewed my body as more of a canvas than anything else. With that being said, it was fun to try something new and out of my element- and a little "dangerous."

B: Our readers are very familiar with KJ Heath who shot the cover of David Davila for the September issue. You are in the same shower as David. Tell me about that shoot and what it was like to work with KJ.

JR: KJ is absolutely amazing! We started off with movement shots, which helped me to be more comfortable in front of the camera. He's very easy going and gives great direction, which helps a lot, and was very open to any ideas that I had, looks I wanted to shoot, etc. Since it was my first shoot, I felt a little awkward at first, but then just decided to have fun, which made all the difference in the world. The shoot probably lasted two hours, but was so much fun it felt like 15 minutes. I highly recommend working with KJ, and can't wait to work with him again!

B: How does modeling differ from dancing, and how are they similar?

JR: That’s a very good question. I think in essence they are achieving something very similar - using the body to convey an idea or emotion, but with photography, there is obviously significantly more stillness versus expression through movement. I also think that in front of the camera, I consciously have to be more pedestrian and less dancer- which is my natural tendency but doesn't always come across right.

B: What type of dancer are you and where have you performed?

JR: I'd consider myself a commercial contemporary dancer. If you've seen So You Think You Can Dance, you know what I mean J and I've done all kinds of stuff, from Broadway workshops, to industrials in LA, TV Shows, the Nutcracker and a lot of more concert work recently in Chicago.

B: Did you study dance when you were young?

JR: I started dance when I was about 6 years old.

B: My sister studied ballet for years, including in France, and I noticed a level of passion in performers that is undeniable. What is it about dancing that appeals to you?

JR: Dancing is the most natural way of expression for me. There's just something about both being in class and on a stage and having the ability to give my own interpretation of someone else's vocabulary that speaks to me. Dancing quiets my head and makes me smile.

B: Chicago is a great place for artists and has so much to offer. What do you like most about this amazing city?

JR: I love how community driven it is. It's a huge city; but whichever smaller circle you run in, everyone supports each other and helps to make the community thrive.

B: Chicago is also known for its blistering winter season, which probably scares off quite a few people. What do you find least appealing about living there?

JR: Exactly that…the winter.

B: You are originally from Iowa. What was it like living there, and why did you decide to move to the windy city?

JR: I am from a tiny town in Iowa of about 5,000 people. Needless to say growing up wasn't the easiest experience. However it made me who I am and I wouldn't trade any of it. With that being said, Chicago has given me a plethora of opportunities, but is still close enough that I can get home for the holidays.

B: Were you artistic in your youth?

JR: Most definitely. If I wasn't dancing I was on stage somehow, acting or singing, from as young as I can remember.

B: It is often said that many performers, be it actors, singers, dancers or models were basically shy or outcasts who used the arts as a means of expression. My sister was the complete opposite – totally outgoing in all aspects of her life. What were you like growing up?

JR: It’s funny - everyone considers me incredibly outgoing and always has, but I actually consider myself to be very shy. I think I have always kind of put myself out there merely as a compensation for that fact.

B: Do you have any other artistic interests besides dance?

JR: I love the arts in all aspects, but dance has always been and will always be my prime focus artistically.

B: What do you do when you’re not dancing or planning your next move in the modeling world?

JR: I'm constantly doing something. I teach Pilates and do post physical therapy rehabilitation, so I'm always reading about that. I read a lot, go to the gym, cook, etc. As I'm typing this I realize how boring I am ha-ha, but it keeps me occupied.

B: Male modeling, with the exception of fashion, seems to revolve around the axis of sex appeal. What do you consider sexy?

JR: Physicality aside, I think someone who can make me laugh is sexy. Confidence and a vulnerable side as well. And I'm a sucker for a beautiful smile, lips, eyes and abs J

B: It is difficult to critique ourselves with the same level of comfort that we do others, but what would you say is your best feature?

JR: it's not exactly a 'feature,' but I think my best trait is my fearlessness.

B: Youth carries its own special beauty, but maturity can be just as, if not more so attractive. What defines beauty to you?

JR: I think beauty is realty;the tender moments when we are real…scared, excited, happy, sad. Moments when we care for each other above ourselves. That, I think, defines beauty. When we aren't scared to show who we really are, even if it means being vulnerable.

B: Drag is finally reaching a larger audience, thanks to RuPaul’s Drag Race, and there’s a snapshot of you with season two favorite Jujubee in your Facebook photos. Are you a fan of the show?

JR: I am! I am actually rooting for one of the Chicago contestants on the upcoming season!

B: Do you watch much television? If so, what are your favorite programs?

JR: I don't get to watch a lot of TV, but I'm a huge fan of Modern Family, and Once Upon a Time. And of course I'll always watch a repeat of Sex and the City.

B: Now that you have moved into the modeling arena, are there any photographers that you’d like to work with?

JR: To be honest with you, since I started I have just been so blessed to work with amazing photographers. I just hope that my luck continues and I have the opportunity to work with even more!

B: Can you list 5 things about yourself that even those who know you would be surprised to learn?

JR:

1. I am incredibly self conscious all the time

2. I still sleep with a Teddy bear. His name is Dilly Bob

3. I am emphatically opposed to being late

4. I have absolutely no game when it comes to guys. At all!

5. When I was little I wanted to grow up to be a dog.

B: What can we look forward to in 2012 from you?

JR: Hopefully lots! I have two more shoots lined up for January and February so hopefully you won't forget my face too soon J
